Blackfire Crystal Coat problems...

I had the same issue trying to coat a 2016 STi... It's was about 65 degrees in my garage. I applied it with one drop of two but that wasn't even enough to cover a quarter panel the way the video is. I then figured more product... Well not knowing any better and first time using BFCC I thought you had to really buff hard. So needless to say I did the whole STi with issues on every panel no matter how thin, and wasted my time and product.

Good thing I read this. I wasn't aware of the short shelf life. That puts a bit of a damper on things. I'll have to plan my details better. The bottle states no liability for misuse, so the OP is getting a deal on replacement.

Great tip! I wasn't a fan of the the OPT foam applicator I used to apply OPT Gloss Coat. Next car, I'll definitely try the CarPro setup you mention.
Thanks! :props:

:dblthumb2: Glad I could get that tidbit out there. ;)

Yep... and keep in mind when buying the CarPro suede that you want to get the 40cm x 40cm size. (AG says it's out of stock right now.) :( Might try Cee Dog at CarPro direct and see if he's got any in stock.

Bottom line... the 4" squares are $1.29 EACH. But you move to the 16" squares and you can get 16 out of each square, ten squares total, for a total of ONE HUNDRED SIXTY 4" square applicators! :dblthumb2: Even better.... your cost now drops down to 12½¢ EACH!!! :D

When cut further, do the edges threads at the scissor cut area stay intact ?

Also have you used the Blackfire coating with the suedes? I find the coating to be grabby and wasn't sure if the suedes would make the applicator glide any smoother.

I've never had a problem with the fabric fraying. I actually use a pair of heavy "pinking shears" that have a zig zag cut to them and they work great.

I suspect that you could get any sort of decorative scissor like from a craft store, something with a wavy edge or scalloped edge and literally come up with the same type edge the OEM cloth has. :)

Nope, not used BF yet. But will be trying it for sure. Cquartz finest is a bit thicker than the other two and it works fine with it.

I do exactly as cardaddy does. I have some large sheets of MF suede. It's much more economical and I've never experienced any fraying of the edges like one would experience cutting most cloth. I use a regular scissors, not fabric scissors.

I have the CarPro block and a 22PLE block.

Does keeping BFCC on fridge could helps to extend opened shelf life?

Thanks

Yup... I'm with you Kevin. I've used CQuartz (both consumer and pro), Gtechniq, PBL, Duragloss, Optigloss, even the one that Meguiar's came out with, to name a few. By FAR I'd say that the method of application is where you need to be the most critical.

Using the CarPro foam block with suede microfiber cloth is THE WAY to go. :dblthumb2:

I've tried the round foam applicators, even the massive (for a coating applicator) LC foam wedge, and can't stand them.

You just can't get the precise, even, consistent, thin, works the first time, application like you do with the CarPro block and suede cloth. ;)

That being said... glad to read any and all input on the BF coating because it's the one coming next! ;) I'm thinking AG should and COULD offer a coating that is every bit as thick, durable, and strong as any "pro" coating out there. :props:

The first time I ordered 16 X 16 suede I obviously got the 12 X 12. This lSt time I got the proper size.
Are they really putting it in a spray bottle now? A mist will start to cross link by being exposed to oxygen at a much faster rate. I ordered the prep and BOGO. Contact me car daddy we'll do some testing. I got two bottles for 40.00

I just got the 8oz bottle. I hope it's good and does not go bad quickly. I don't use the coatings all that often. I might have to start now. I'm hoping for easy application. Not real sure after reading all the post.

Will do Dave!:dblthumb2:

Funny... noticed the e-mails today from Autogeek then Autopia. Both having 20% off sale, yet you have to be savvy to catch that Autopia is a "no exclusions" sale. :D

Yeah, from my understanding, it's easy if you apply it extremely conservatively. I don't think I've seen this mentioned, but if you could put the BFCC into a dropper, or something else, that would make it easier to control the flow onto the applicator. The BFCC is very watery, and the cap makes it very easy to dump too much product on the applicator. Once you put too much on the paint, it'll ruin your day.

Using the right applicators also helps. The Lake Country foam wedge applicators absorb a lot of product and can make it difficult to apply the coating as thin as it needs to be. I can imagine the microfiber suede would lay a more consistently thin coating.

Nick said they use the more expensive heat seal on the bottle to give it longer unopened shelf life, once exposed to air it will start cross linking and that the product is only good for a month after opening. I bought some when it first came out. I did a Civic SI with no problems, then close to a month later did a Honda Accord with no issues. Both these applications were in higher (85+) temperatures with moderate humidity.
Now I'm a little concerned about the two bottles I just got on BOGO. There is a good chance that inventory has been sitting on the shelf for a while. I'm trying to line up three cars that I can coat within a month before I open it. One other thing...I did not use their prep. Just IPA.
Regrettably the AutoGeek information about Blackfire Crystal Coat does not mention the very short shelf life. If I had known about that issue, I would not have purchased the 4 oz bottle back in May. I had great results using it over Memorial Day weekend. When I used it for the second time mid September, it was a dreadful experience. As soon a my life slows down a bit, I will contact AutoGeek to request a refund for a product that they apparently misrepresented.

It's rare, but some products act differently when produced in large batches (compared to lab samples that are formulated by the ounce versus 100+ gallons). When it warms up in your area give me a shout and I'll replace it with another bottle or send you something different.

Is this one the resin based coating?

No, quartz based.

Just to add to the feedback I used the product yesterday. It had been previously opened a few months ago. The temperatures were high 50s. Applying it to the applicator it seemed as usual, but as soon as it hit the paint it was immediately sticky and thick. I was lucky to get it to buff off, but buffing was so hard the paint marred, so a polish off is necessary.

All that said, I think it looks fantastic, and is easy to apply the product when fresh. I wish they offered it in smaller sizes for the home user who is not going to use a bottle up in a month or two. I would use it agian, but I would have all my cars ready to be coated first.

I tried it and liked it so much that I just bought an 8oz bottle. Like the rest of you I hope I don't have a problem.

I tried it yesterday as I had some areas of paint transfer on my Lexus that I had to correct and I obviously took go the Cquartz in doing so. I opened a brand new bottle that was sent to me a few weeks ago. Like the OP, the product turned sticky almost instantly while applying and I could not "buff the high spots" as it turned into a glue like mess. I have experience with GlossCoat in addition to the CQuartz UK, and this was nothing like those two. I imagine thats why the product was the "free mystery gift" offered by a popular online detailing store.
