I know this has been brought up a million times on here , and many will say look it up, were tired of this type of question, so please bare with me. I do my own painting in my garage, yes it is not a clean garage, and I get dirt and bugs in my paint jobs, but my cars are no 100 point show cars, and will never be, I'm ok with that. after I wet sand and buff my cars out, I always have nasty buffer marks ( swirls ) I have a pic of one of my cars and you can see what I mean. After paint, I sand with 1500, then I use my Milwaukee 7"/9" polisher to buff , using Finess-it. Sorry for being so long winded . My Question is should I buy a lighter weight and more up to date polisher? I see some say buy a Harbor Freight. should I go with a kit , so everything works together ? I don't want to spend 1000 on it, but would be willing to spend around 300.00, what do some of you think?

Looking at my pic you can't see the buffing marks.

First thing Id do is post way better pics.

Is that makita a rotary? Going with a DA like the harbor freight can clean it up the rotary buffer trails/holograms. I dont know how much clearcoat you are working with but for $300 you can get more than enough product.

Id get some nice pads, the harbor freight ones are kinda junk. LC flat pads will be the ones most recommend. m105/205 will be another people recommend but Im partial to Menzerna products.

Good questions!

There are quite a few guys who will remove sanding marks with wool on a rotary/compound, and finish with a d/a and a polish like M205.

These days I do everything on an orbital, where I used to do everything on a rotary.

I used to be able to remove sanding marks with wool, and Meguiar's M02 Fine Cut Cleaner. I'd use the Meguiar's burgundy with M02 for general defect removal. I'd follow either of those with M09 Swirl Remover on a Yellow Meguiar's polishing pad.

There was one time where I had to move to M01 Medium Cut Cleaner..

Get the GG6 and never look back! :D

That along with 5½" pads can finish anything you'll run across. It can even remove wet sanding marks down to 1500 grit fairly easily. FWIW you can pick that puppy up from Advance Auto for under a hundred bucks (with the right coupon code). ;)

I agree with throw out the rotory (not really) and start with the GG6

Yeah... I suppose you can. (Providing you don't mind the extra 52 bucks.) ;)

Well that's unfortunate!:(
I know it's worked before, even had guys tell me they've bought them that way as well.

Hopefully they'll get them back in stock, (never can have too many buffers).

Okay... so I just had a conversation with AAP. They don't have them in the warehouse now, BUT the SKU is still active. (That's a good thing.) ;) Even had the guy give me yet another code to use (for when they DO come back in stock)! Although it's only 25% where the one I had is 30%.

Won't AG match the Advance price??

Pfffftttt.... Wouldn't hold my breath. (Depending on the coupon code it'd be from 15% to 30% off.) Plus free shipping. :D

They'll match other "detailing" sites... but AG doesn't match auto parts stores. (Even though it's the same product.) :dunno:

Need help, this is what I have after polishing with finess it, cloudy haze, and scratches . And I use this polisher, with wool pad.

Then I get this after I use Harbor Freight 6 " polisher ( holding out for GG6 from advance auto, when they come in ) with polish in pic. still small haze and scratches

I did this with my GG21 yesterday.

That's a 60 watt light bulb in the reflection and the only lighting in my garage at this point, pic taken with no flash.

and this is what I want to use at end of job, but I need to get these scratches and hazing out. this is what I have now in pics, where do I go from here? Please help, I'm new to this, and want it to look good. what do you all think I should do from here?

What type of pad should I use? foam, wool, ect ? What buffer should I use ( out of what I have now).

Buff & Shine Orange with Cut and Polish, for severe swirls use yellow with Cut. Polish you can use Orange and then really bling it out with a white pad and Polish then top with Poxy.

That's what I used on my hood. (I did throw Speed in between but wouldn't do that in the future, no reason for the additional step, I was experimenting.)

I must say that's a nice little 73 442 you have there...

The paint on my 442 was wasted when I bought it 15 years ago. I was of the philosophy that I'd try anything, because I figured I couldn't screw up the paint any more than it was.

I bought a PC instead of the GG and use 5.5" Lake Country CCS pads. I experimented with some of the polished in the XMT line, #4, #3 and #1. I have also used XMT 360 AIO and that seemed to finish down well. Topped with Collinite 845.

Although the only solution in my case is an eventual repaint, the work I put in does make it look significantly more presentable.

Good luck! Would love to see some more pics, hear some specs on that car! There aren't very many of them around anymore!
