Camaro - V6 vs. V8, not sure what to do.

As other have already suggested, keep your current car and if you want more power look for bolt on's. With FI you can be in the 400+hp in no time! :props:

It's a dumb move. save your money.. I just dropped 32,000 on a brand new maxima. Great car, but my payments are almost 450 a month and thats with a 1.9 APR.

You also need to factor in the extra gas, and everyone seams to be all about taxing wasteful cars... I know it's not happening yet, but soon I have no doubt.

Hello. I have a bit of a conundrum here that I wanted to run across you. Last year I purchased a V6 2010 Camaro and it's a great car. Obviously I chose the V6 route to cut down the cost. Well, a year later I still love the car but I feel as though I sold myself short. Now I want the V8. The problem is that I have no cash to put down on the a V8. The Kelly Blue Book trade-in value is a couple grand more than what I currently owe on the car, so assuming the dealership gives me a good trade I should come out ahead (well, not really, I put $8500 down on the car so technically I'd be down about $6500, but oh well). Anyhow, the dealership told me that, depending upon my credit, they could take the loan out to about 10 years in order to lower the monthly payment to around what I'm paying now for my V6 Camaro. I currently owe around 23 grand on my car and the V8 will run around 40 grand with tax and title. Minus the 1-2 grand I would get on the trade-in, I would be going from a debt of 23 grand with 6 years left to pay to about 39-40 grand with 10 years left to pay and almost certainly a higher APR. I know it wouldn't be the smartest financial move, but I want the V8 so badly I can taste it. I'm certainly not a rich man, just a run of the mill I.T guy. So what is a guy to do, make a foolish financial decision for something that would make me really happy, or suck it up and save up the cash for a year or two? I'm not the most patient man in the world. I don't know, I guess I should have just got the 2SS Camaro last year.

Your gonna see alot smaller motors and V8's are going to be taxed heavily or removed as CAFE standards increase to meet the new laws. Also gas aint getting cheaper and soon could be back to 4 per gallon.

I'm going to wait for the Z28, regardless of how much they tax it. And not to hijack my own thread, but I think that's a shame that they're going to start taxing fun, muscle cars that way. What happened to this country?

BAD BAD BAD political leaders that are only out for their own gain... for decades on end

Can't smoke anywhere anymore, pretty soon we won't be able to drive muscle cars anymore. It's a shame.

I don't mind the smoking thing, as I can actually go places and not have to worry about not being able to breath (I have asthma). But muscle cars going away will be a shame, although I think they are quickly becoming a thing of the past..

They put another big tax on tanning salons as well. Not that that particular tax will directly affect me since I would have nothing to do with one but there is no doubt it is a crime for the goverment to steal money from businesses. The tanning salons were an easy target for them. Not sure if they realized they would be putting a lot of businesses owned by woman into financial trouble...
Another good one, cash for clunkers. Income tax paid for that. Take perfectly good vehicles and fill them with a special solution to destroy the engine and then junk them. That sounds like a brilliant idea for the environemnt... I wonder what the environmental impact of the new vehicle being created tp replace the old one is.... Hmmm, junking resources which means you have to use more resources to replace it. Sounds like a great idea. What's that you say? You'll take the money from my check to pay for that idea? Oh Wow! Now thats brilliant! Thank you so much :)
Paying for the air you breath could soon to be reality. Used to be a joke but in the near future the government will probably have a tax in their somewhere that charges you for the carbon dioxide that you emit into the atmosphere when you breath. You can bet if the pres can he will.

Just drop $800-$1000 and get a Diablosport tuner,a CAI and an exhaust and you will be happy for a while. We have a 2006 Mustang V6 the wife had bought when we were dating. We got married and payed it off before it was 2 years old and now is our car show and play toy.A few boltons later and it will keep up with the GT's...

I believe this was well deserved. When it finally became known that cigarettes can lead to lung cancer many of the individuals needing medical care for the after affects of thier choice were on medicare and the government was footing the bill for it. This will likely repeat itself. Its funny people dont seem to care if a tobacco company were to go out of business, but man a tanning salon which is also in a business that repeated use of that businesss product/ service significantly increases thier customers chance for cancer and it is a tragedy. Just my0.02

I completely understand and respect your point. The govermnent (my income taxes) shouldn't be paying for the choices people make with their health. I completely agree and don't think anybody could argue that.
Where the complex issue lies for me is whether or not the company they bought said product from should be paying for it. No matter what anybody ever told me I would know that inhaling smoke into my blood and lungs isn't good for me and that is my choice. Same with tanning, same with cell phones, etc, etc. Where do you draw the line. The gas fumes you inhale driving down the road. The paint fumes you inhale when painting. The chemicals in the water. The poison in the food we buy.
There is an argument to be made on both sides of this. Case by case, the argument can be a little stronger on one side or the other depending on a lot of things like false advertising. I just think that personal choice and responsibility is something that gets lost a lot these days. If I decide to smoke it sucks but is my responsibility and you shouldn't pay for it with your taxes and the company that I bought it from shouldn't pay for it unless they forced me to do it.

Yeah, it was.........but I've since decided to stick with the V6 and wait for the Z28, so I don't mind that this thread changed direction.

Not sure if this applies to you, but back in 1992, the 4th generation Honda Prelude came out and I bought the Si model. Loved the styling. Loved the handling even more! Then, in 93', they came out with the VTEC model. Same handling prowess, but with 190 hp instead of 160. I wanted the VTEC soooo bad! But I stuck with the Si and enjoyed every minute of driving it for ten years.
I currently own a 96' Prelude VTEC and an 08' IS350. The IS350 will blow the doors off the Prelude (and any stock V6 ponycar out there!), but I still like the handling of the Prelude better. It just feels more in tune with the road.
From what I've read so far in all the car magazines, the V6 model actually handles much better than the V8 model because it's lighter and better balanced. (That's BMW's secret, BTW!) IMO, you bought the better car. Of course, if your sole passion is to drag race from stoplight to stoplight, then I guess you did get the wrong car.

I agree personal choice and responsibility for that choice should hold true in both cases but too often it does not and the government (taxpayers) ends up paying the bill. Not the person who made the choice or the company who profitted from that choice. It seems we are on the same side of personal responsibility but the difference comes in how it is applied.

every time i boight a new truck and went with the smaller motor i was always pissed in the end. should of went bigger. finnalyi did in 2006. 6.0 turbo diesel oyaaa ....

Keep the V6 and save for Z28 if that's what you want. Do not put any money into modding the V6.

First off, I come from a time when 200hp ( growing up in the 1st gen smog equipped cars wasn't fun) seemed like a lot of HP. The newer Camaro and Mustang V6's both put out over 300hp and deliver decent gas mileage. The base engines put out incredible numbers compared to only 10 years ago. Plus you have the side benefit of getting pretty good gas mileage if you are light on the go pedal. I agree with the above post, do not mod it and save for the Z28 if you desire.

The 300+ HP V6 should be plenty of power for that car, 0-60 times are not that much off from the 426Hp engine. Given the price difference and the extra money you'll be paying in PREMIUM gas, it doesn't make that much sense to go out on a limb. Long after the joy of getting what you want, you'll be feeling it in the wallet. The question you may need to ask yourself, "is 1.2 seconds worth $10,000+".
