caution re: well known detailers

First, I'm so sorry that this happened to you I hope all goes well from here on out. I would probably go about this the same way you have with not naming names in an open forum, that said you can bet your beehind I would be blasting the said person in reviews wherever I could.

Where are you on the east coast??

i'm reluctant to say exactly where, but i'm in NJ.

currently i am trying to work out a time with Greg at Signature Detailing in north Jersey and his clear film guy Lee (who shares a unit) so i can get the film done. he's not close to me but it's hard as heck to find someone who does film to a level that would be acceptable to a corrective detailer. if i found someone else who supposedly did film well but wasn't tied to a reputable detailer, i'd have to clean the car at home, drive it to wherever, clean it at the destination and hope that i didn't forget something i needed, etc.

by using a film guy tied directly to a corrective detailer, the idea is that i'll not have to worry about the cleanup from the drive and associated prep being done properly, along with the film job.

i wish i did film myself, haha. then i'd know it would be done right!

fingers crossed that in the meantime my wife doesn't get a chip on her vehicle!

I consider Signature Detailing to be Central Jersey, and Phil (Detailer's Domain) is definitely North Jersey.

wow, sound like a similar experience I had with someone in that SAME area with clear film.. hmm. left razor blade cuts in the paint and also chipped my bumper and filled it with touch up paint.

If you just spent big money on a brand new car and went to bring it to a reputable shop, wouldnt you like to know that the guy before you (and many others) had his car completely screwed up by them ? How would you feel if you brought your vette to the so called "best" shop in town and they gouged the paint with a razor blade and hacked the correction job ?

has this ever happened to one of your vehicles ?

I would not consider this thread or even naming names privately (or publicly) "talking ####" or "tattle-tailing"...

A thread like this could save a lot of people major headaches. I bet you the OP is getting a lot of PM's from people in the jersey area that were considering clear film protection.

I believe the "Lee" you are referring to is Lee Berbs. He did a clear bra on my car and he is quite good. He is also a cool guy to shoot the breeze with. I can vouch for him.

The crazy thing is, he did a CB to the tune of $700 on my car. I thought I was going to pay him with debit/credit - but his debit thingy was down. So, he was just going to let me leave without paying him. I wasn't cool with that, so we did a PayPal transfer. Super cool guy.
 
Im sorry for your stress. Its really unfortunate. I personally think you should name names so it doesn't happen to the next guy. For instance retrosolutions.com scammed me out of $400 by making a ton of false claims on their equipment and warranty. Ill blast their name till the day they close shop. They gave me the run around for a year then finally tell me to submit a warranty claim only for them to point the finger at me for something they made up and not even return the hid kits i sent in at the least. They are thieves and if i can warn others about them then i can do my part to make sure no one else ever goes though what i went through. With that said i say name names.

LOL...Guess it depends where you are in Jersey.

Greg is in Somerset County and Phil is in Bergen County. Pretty much Phil is about as far north in Jersey that you can get before going into NYS.

Yeah, I consider Somerset county Central Jersey and NY State is North Jersey...er, well...yes, Phil is about as far north as you can go without being in NY.
 
i live so far south that Brick, Toms River, etc. is North Jersey to us. i'm being serious!

i wanted to add a funny tidbit.

remember i mentioned in the first post that someone up there, likely his tinter, put a hole in the door card vinyl right under the piece of brushed aluminum trim. when he saw that, he said he would get that repaired professionally when the car was up there last.

last week when i had my interior guy redo what his "interior guy" did, the tech told me that there is 100% no way a professional interior repair person did that work.

it was the wrong color (by a lot), the wrong gloss, the wrong texture and the spatter that i experienced everywhere (on tint, leather panel, jamb paint, buttons, etc.) was a tell tale sign of a spray can. he said he would bet money that someone who doesn't do interior repairs used a DIY kit to execute the work. i had to clay everything to get the overspray off. it was pretty tedious, but worked out well.

the detailer told me repeatedly that his guy was going to handle it. during the last stretch when it was up there, i followed up with the detailer several times and he kept telling me that his guy was coming, his guy was coming after hours, his guy had to come back because he needed the right filler, etc.

anyway, the local dude did an absolutely amazing job redoing this other nonsense. he sanded it down, cleaned it all, masked EVERYTHING off, mixed up a custom color, carefully sprayed it with an air brush and heat gun....then went back with another mix, this time with a fraction of yellow added, and hit it again. it looks and feels like the rest of the door. no hint of any work done.
 
Good to hear it is all coming together! Most importantly is the wife happy?
