Charles Manson dead at 83.

I wonder how many hours of our lives us good taxpayers had to work to pay the bills to keep him alive all this time.

I read an article this morning that said the State of California spent 3 Million on his time behind bars.

...and that is the shame of it all!!! The liberal judge on the case (from California - surprise surprise) commuted his sentence from death to life, and decisions like that have led to punishments never befitting the crime.

Death penalty cases and imprisonment generally cost more than non death-row incarceration. While it cost a lot to keep the POS alive, it would have almost certainly cost more to put him to death. Almost 90% of criminologists don't see the death penalty acting a deterrent to homicide. So if you leave the moral, religious, ethical, and philosophical arguments out of it, the numbers don't support it in terms of being deterrent and cost.

How many people on here believe in the death penalty? Let us know.

why waste anymore money on this evil garbage, throw his body in some shark infested waters somewhere...

Death penalty now! No 47 years, no appeals...do it, get it done!

I neither believe in it or not. Given that it's not a deterrent, it's really all about the penalty. So is it a fair penalty? No question there are people I think need to wiped off the face of the earth. Not sure we want our justice system meting that kind of punishment given that you know some will be wrong. One study shows that ~4% of death row could be proven innocent. I don't want that 4% on my head.

We could. But then we wouldn't have the justice system we have. When you presume innocence and give people the benefit of the doubt, you have to live with the consequences. We also have guilty people going free because they have good defense lawyers. Sucks, but that's how it goes.

I've been a foster parent and have spent too many unpleasant hours in family court. Want to talk about no justice? Ever seen an adorable 18 month old taken from your hands and handed back to an abuser? Not killing a piece of human crap like Manson is not the biggest or most prevalent problem we have. I'd like to fix the big issues we have first and then focus on the 0.01%.

Couldn't agree with you more.

That said, I hope they feed his body to sharks, like someone posted already.
