A good story of a recent job I finished!

A customer contacted me regarding his brand new Chevy shortbox. Being an elderly gentleman, he was looking for a service that would provide him with easy maintenance and swirl resistance. I went to the initial pickup of the vehicle right off the lot, and surprisingly enough it was in pretty fantastic shape - a rare occurrence for my area, unfortunately. Now this gentleman was fine with my pricing and seemed quite thrilled to have my services performed. However, a relative of his expressed his delight with another detailer in town, and so he had decided to go elsewhere. Holding no hard feelings, I advised that should he require anything else to simply let me know and the best of luck.

Well....

Not a month later did I receive a call from this same gentleman. He wanted to let me know that he would like me to perform the same service that I had previously quoted him. Sticking to my pricing, I had no issues with this, but I did request to see the vehicle first. Apparently, the other detailer 'power polished' the truck, before applying a "Diamond Kote". To say the very least, the paint was unfortunately destroyed through whatever processes were used. Severe rotary trails, RIDS, and swirls scattered heavily across the entire vehicle. It was extremely sad to see a vehicle that rolled off the lot in such nice condition, to be treated the way it was.

So now I come into play - rather than doing the originally single-stage polish & CQuartz application, I went a step further at no additional cost:
  • 3 Bucket Hand Wash
  • Iron X
  • Tar X
  • Mechanical Decontamination
  • Diamond Kote Removal (Compound)
  • 2-Stage (FG400, SPF)
  • CQuartz Application
  • DLux Application
  • All other finishing touches

At the end of (a very long) day, the customer was thrilled with the turnout of the vehicle and I was happy to help. Although I did not perform what I would consider a full paint correction, I still felt that for no extra charge, the customer received what they should have in the first place.

Hope you enjoyed the bit of a story here! Pictures below...

And now the process/after pictures...

Don't mind the dust on it now ;)

Thanks for reading everyone!!

Only one picture shows up.

The big question is, are you now doing the car of the person who recommended the other detailer?

Fixed - Thanks for the heads up!

Time will tell - if anything, I hope that the other company who performed the initial procedure may learn from this experience & strengthen their employee(s) skill-set and knowledge to prevent this from happening again, & have more happy customers for the future.

Wow! It's hard to believe that other detailer did that to a new truck. That's even worse than most dealership hack jobs.

Great job, and nice of you to spend the extra time on it getting back to how it should be!!!

Thank-you! I wish I had more time to work with it to really get the clarity to ~95%, but overall I was still pleased with the work based off of the time invested.

Very Nice. Hopefully he will appreciate the extra work you did for free and recommend the friend who swayed him the other way to you.

Outstanding job on fixing someone else's bad job:)

Your attitude was fantastic as was the job you did! Great job!

Ouch! That is really unfortunate that you had the truck in your hands (even collected it from the lot) and the owner was persuaded to take his truck elsewhere. Kudos to you for rising above and returning the truck to a proper state without the extra labor charge. Nicely done. :props:

What was your machine(s) and pad choices?

Thanks for sharing the story behind the detail.

Thanks everyone! Besides cropping, none of those photos have been edited.

To those wondering what I had used...

Unfortunately my G21, Flex, etc was out at the time; I was limited with what I had to work with, but as we all know, sometimes it's more than just the products used. Here is a quick breakdown:

  • GG6 Polisher
  • Menzerna FG400
  • Sonax Perfect Finish
  • MG MF Cutting Pad
  • B&S Orange Pad
  • B&S Black Pad

Note that some of that was for the Diamond Kote removal.

Otherwise, I used DLux, GTechniq C5 for the wheels, and various other products for all the trims and fixings.
