Clay a ceramic coating?

Claying is going to remove the coating. It's job is to be a sacrificial layer in order to protect the paint and clear coat. It's pricey, but that premium is insurance to protect everything.

It will not remove a ceramic coating. The risk is the chance of marring the surface. I've clayed my own personal cars that are coated to prep them for a re-coat and not one time has clay ever removed a coating.

Thanks for all the replies! I really don't have much choice but to clay bar it to get rid of the overspray, I guess I'll just make sure to have more CQuartz on-hand to re-apply afterwards if I notice the coating has been removed. I assume it will be pretty evident that its been removed after clay bar? I didn't notice any difference in the spot I tested, other than it passing the baggie test. That's the reason why I figured I'd ask the question here, I don't visibly see any difference, other than the dust-like overspray.

You can clay if you need to. Clay will not remove coating, a coating is too tough for clay to remove. The only guaranteed way of coating removal is a polish. Go ahead and clay to your hearts content. Use lots of lube though.

I've had the same Opti-Coat coating on my hood for 3+ years, been too afraid to clay it. Finally couldn't stand it anymore, clayed it a couple of weeks ago, polished with PO86RD (Menzerna super fine polish). Was prepared to lose the coating, but it held up just fine.

Why clay and polish if you weren't going to do a re-coat? Did your 'coating' pick up contaminants? If so, sounds like it was time for a re-coat anyway?

Was this a "serious" coating like Mohs or CQuartz, or one of the "lite" ones similar to CanCoat?

My CanCoated car was blasted with sprinklers over the weekend at the minerals in the watter spotted the horizontal CanCoat'ed surfaces. I'd rather try clay before polishing them out, but if the clay will remove the lighter coating anyway, I might as well polish.

I use a very mild clay, Sonus, on coated vehicles with McKee's 914 for clay lube without any damage or removal of the coating.
