Clay & Clay Experiment

Dude! you just hit the jackpot. You can buy it by the kilo, re-badge it, re-box it and sell it for half the price.

Yeah, and get hit with a patent-infringement lawsuit (at least here in the US, I don't know if there is a patent in Australia).

I'll stick with detailing clay :) Has anyone checked on NanoSkin?

After using the Speedy Prep towel, no more need for clay. It turned my most hated thing to do into something very easy and not as time consuming.

I did an experiment on this about a year ago and was very surprised with the results.

The clay I used was some ordinary clay and it did work but it did leave some residue behind. I was using Ultim Waterless Wash Concentrate and I have to admit that it was a lubricious as a clay lube other other detail sprays I've used.

If I mixed an ounce of car wash in 32 ounces of water I'll bet this would bump up the lubrication factor quite a bit keeping residue to a bare minimum to nothing.

I still have plenty but I'd like to experiment with some of the other alternative clays mentioned...:props:

speedy prep looks like a great alternative ? they also have that other new nano skin product out as well

With Blu Tack there is no residue whatsoever, it glides over the paint like any other dedicated car clay I used in the past.

It look like Blu Tack is not available in the US however UK & Australian detailers will benefit from this ..

Ha ha - no but I just raided the stationery cupboard at work.

You would note there is Blu Tack available in light blue and white.

I find the white stuff is a tad softer and easier to fold over however the blue one performs well too.

I just restock-ed yesterday with heaps of Blu Tack at $2.48 per package.

I found a supplier in England for one pound twelve. or $1.81 for the 110 gram package of Blue tek.

I'll post if they are actually for real and what the shipping charges are.

I can not say how this works as I only tested the Blu Teck, but you can give it a go ..

It look like its available in the states .. or maybe not?!

Personally I wouldn't try this picture hanging clay. Cut your costs somewhere else with less potential risk (that's the only reason to try this stuff).

Simply put, detailing clay is just a different substrate for abrasives. The substrate is carefully controlled for ingredients and impurities since it contacts your paint directly, and the abrasive added to it is carefully controled for size and hardness, just as it is with the manufacture of different grits of sandpaper.

While this picture hanging clay may (I emphasize "may") be made today from a carefully controlled process and ingredients, that is just a fortunate coincidence and it was never intended to be a controlled abrasive to be used for automotive paint finishes. Any change in the manufacturing process or materials they use (e.g. to cut costs without affecting the intended purpose of hanging pictures) could introduce things that mar or scratch paint.

Just not worth it in my opinion. Especially if you work on other people's cars.

Gotcha.

I'd also like to ask opinions on the clay's they sell on ebay. There's some really cheap automotive clay for sale there.. Alibaba website has these same clay's originating from China, and I just wanted to know if anyone has tried them and how they are compared to normal $20+ clay bars.

I'd surmise that if it's really cheap stuff coming from China, that it's infringing on the patents here, but they don't care because there's no way to get to them, and they aren't actually importing it, you are. In effect, they aren't really selling it here. This is semantically a little different situation than Eshine sending Riccardo clay here (which he doesn't).

I saw some crazy cheap 3M-marked clay, coming from Hong Kong for $1.39 shipping. I can only presume it's made by/for 3M for the non-US and non-Japanese markets (since the patents are in effect there), and being illegally sold here. I'm sure it's fine clay, I'm just not sure who is responsible for infringing the patent in this case, you or the Hong Kong seller, but for less than $6 it would seem worth a try.

Disclaimer: I won't be buying any illegal ebay clay for a number of reasons (including that I have tons of clay already), and I'm not encouraging anyone else to, either. Wait until next year when the patents expire and you'll see clay pricing come down here in the US.

bump. Anyone have anymore test results?

Yes, I know of at least 20 more guys who acquired Blu Tack as their claying preference.

Give it a go, you'll be amazed, I can guarantee you that.

Herewith another photo of wife's car being clayed with both Blu Tack and Meguiars clays.

After I finished with Blu Tack clay, the panel was wiped off with QD and then re-clayed with Mequiars clay.

As you can see from the photo there is NOTHING that Meguiars clay could collect from the panel that Blu Tack couldn't.

Is this telling you something?

Let see the photo to prove it:

What is the risk please? The risk is only on your pocket paying 10 times more for a re-badged stuff.

It would be good if you try this in practice first and then comment, otherwise your theory doesn't have any weight whatsoever.

Bostik is a reputable manufacturer, nothing illegal in buying their products I guess. I suggest you too should give it a go, then we can discuss the results! How about that? :xyxthumbs:
