Clearcoat!!!

I have just polished through the clearcoat on my hood. I was using a PC with surbuf and Meg105. I am assuming that it will have to be painted?

Yes, it will require a total repaint and reclear

If it went through on the very edge, then u could get some touch up paint & drag it with a touch up brush. Other wise you'll need it repainted & cleared. I just dont see how u went through with a PC.

That is an aggressive combo, quote per Todd/Esoteric

"With this combination, you can get rotary/wool level of correction with a much finer finish and less of a risk of buffer burn. I say less because there’s still a chance…this combination cuts hard and fast, and you still need to be very careful around edges, ridges, and any other notoriously thin spots"
 
I went through on my hood also, with a pc. It was on a sharp body line. But it ddn't really bother me, the hood is in bad shape anyways.

I've never used surbuf pads. Do they have a real aggressive cut?? How many times did you go over this area?? Was it a crown (raised edge)??
Sorry to hear that. That really sucks.
 
Hate to hear that. I use surbuf and 105 for paint transfer and headlights. I have used them with DA and Flex PE 14 with no significant heat build up. But you can bet I'm going to be a lot more careful after hearing about your hood.
 
It was on a flat area of the hood that appeared to have some pretty bad etching. I am not sure if it had something spilled on that area or what but I suspect it was already very thin. I used the same technique on the entire car without issue except that on area on the hood.
 
I just can't see how that's possible. I seriously don't know if I could do that with a pc if I tried. You sure you didn't just melt the clear a little or something of the like? I'm seriously baffled by this. Do you have paint pigment on your pad? Are you sure it's not a single stage paint? What type of car is it. I just can't believe it.
 
As long as it cuts through paint, it can cut through the clear coat. It might take more time and effort with a DA than a rotary, but I don't see why it wouldn't be doable, particularly with Surbufs and M105 - the PC won't magically stop cutting just because you've abraded away too much clear :)

What do you pros recommend after applying a coat of Meguirs compound on a blk car? silicone free glaze ? Wax? What brand of clear coat?...please help..thank you!!!!!

He did say the clear coat had some etching there...I wonder if the etching was actually the clear coat failing in that area. I don't think it would take much to buff through dead clear coat...

Yeah but...not saying the OP did this, but it's a frequent newb problem to not know when to stop. You polish your car with an aggressive combo like the OP used, the swirls come out, but this darn scratch/etch/etc. is still there, maybe if I just keep polishing, and polishing....how many through-the-clear wet sanding stories have we heard like this? I was trying to wetsand out a scratch....

I bet that's what it was. I know that theoretically it's possible to go through clearcoat with a da. But it would be very very difficult on good clearcoat. Anything's possible I guess...
