Critique my headlight restoration...

Interesting item. Why not just wet sand with 1000 grit and then clearcoat, if that is what the kit does? I guess their finishing product is a single layer thing and doesn't produce orangepeel. That is the issue with the 24 hour dry time for clear coat.... you have to wait before you can wet sand the orange peel away.

I don't think I could use something that produces average result. Right now I offer 2 restoration packages for headlights: Polishing or wetsanding. Doing a compound on them makes them a lot better but far from perfect, sounds like this is what this product does. Wetsanding is very time consuming and makes a real mess on the car, but unless there is damage in the plastic or inside the headlamp, they usually get 90% to 100% perfect. In the case of micro cracks through the plastic (happens a lot on Volvos), nothing can be done for those. And if the there is haze inside the headlight, it can be fixed but you have to take the headlight off the car, fill it with water, drain it, dry it... takes for ever. So it's a pain in the neck and it's not a service I want to offer because some headlights are very difficult to remove.

Unlike using dry sandpaper and spraying “clearcoat” while being extra tedious to either cover the rest of the vehicle with plastic or somehow not get any overspray on the paint this kit is more forgiving aka Bubba proof.

I wouldn’t be so quik to dismiss and label it “average result”... This simple kit can sometimes produce very impressive results. Remember I said it’ll wow average Joe most of the time.

As a professional, would I bank on it? Well I surely wouldn’t use it as my sole method for restoring headlights, but 9 times out of 10 it will produce better results than compounding alone, especially if you consider the fact that it leaves a respectable layer of protection behind compared to compounding and whatever shabby lsp that might last only a month or so if you’re lucky.

Interesting. Have you tried it yourself? Will check the store for it, try it on my next order.

Time to polish away the sanding marks. McKee’s AIO Headlight Restoring Polish w/Gray Thinpro. Speed 6. I’ve had nothing but stellar results with this polish/pad combo on headlights.
