DA or Rotary? Hopefully DA...

My Mustang is a 2ft car. Two feet from the finish in good light and the paint looks amazing. However, when you get close there are hard water stains. I realize the only way to remove them will be to eventually buy a DA or Rotary to do a full polish. I'm a Mothers fan so that means i'll be using their Ultimate Wax Sytstem(1,2,3) to get the job done.

However, will a DA be able to get the job done? Removing both water spots/swirl correction/removing scratches. Naturally DA's are meant to do some work but when I read or what videos with Mike in them he typically refers to Rotary's to remove water spots.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
 
da's will do the job. For someone new, I would recommend the Griot's Garage and Meguiars ultimate compound and ultimate polish.
 
A DA will correct anything a rotary can, the difference is in the time it takes to do so. When I got into machine polishing a few months ago I didn't even consider a rotary. I was even hesitant (scared) to use a DA on my new paint. I got over that in about 5 mins. :) There is no looking back now, I love my PC7424xp!
 
A DA will do the job EASILY!! Even the most seasoned detailers don't use a rotary much these days.
 
yes DA will get the job done

and if the set of pads you will purchase doesnt have the enought cut

u can simply buy a microfiber pad or LC cool wool pad

Very true!

All of the guys that do the best work (such as Dalton, Kosilla, etc) all use DAs

The Griots is the best starter DA on the market. I know quite a few pro guys that even use them professionally because they have so much power.

If you want to learn to master forced rotation, get a Flex DA. Since the Rupes came out on AG, the 3401 has been getting a lot of negative feedback, but honestly they are almost as good as a rotary with regards to correction speed. Very good machine, but pricey.

Really the rotary buffer use today has changed. When it comes to sanding marks, multistep polishes, heavy correction, and pin point correction. Rotaries rule. Although learning how to master a rotary takes practice. To someone who has never polished a car with a machine will have a hard time and get spooked by it, to never use it again.

All round correction and general use, DAs are your best bet.

Now as already mentioned, DAs can do exactly what rotaries do, just slower. I have removed deep RIDS with an orange pad and WGTSR on my Porter Cable... took a while but it polished out!

To answer your question, get a DA!
 
I really want a da but for now I only have a rotary. Here is a pic of my first attempt with it on a spare fender from a junk yard..using wet sanding then megs uc & yellow heavy cut pad followed by megs up & blue polish pad, then megs carnuba wax with a fineness pad..
Not bad for first try with no teaching.




O and here is a hood from a junk yard to it was a bit harder in much worse shape..

Get a DA, but I would hit it with a mf pad and menz fg400 or megs m100.
 
I always hear about using a dawn wash on a car before you clay/wax it. I understand this is supposed to help strip the car of any existing products. As my car has been waxed i'd want to run the car down with some dawn, clay, swirl remover, polish, wax. in that order?

Not necessary if you intend to clay and polish, as clay will strip wax and polishing removes clear coat, thus removing any lsp on your paint
 
Which makes sense, glad i dont have to put anything harsh on the car.
