I’m looking into upgrade my Meguiars MT300. It’s time to step it up I’m looking toward a flex 3401 or rupes. What y’all opinion I could use some help.

You can’t go wrong with either brand, but I’m a Rupes man through and through. In my opinion, Rupes is the best made polisher on the market. Try a Rupes 15 MKII, the best all around Rupes DA polisher.
 
Thanks for your opinion. Rupes definitely looks like a beast of a machine. What’s your opinion on backing plate sizes and which pads work best

if stalling is an issue with you then the flex 3401 (gear driven) would be the way to go (can accommodate 4" - 6.5" pads with different backing plates/pads). if you want to dedicate your mt300 to a smaller pad set up, then a large throw polisher (G15/21) would be a great addition with that. there's a lot of threads on this topic and it really comes down to personal preference (you will get different opinions as well), there's really no wrong answer...

It's amazingly smooth and a pleasure to polish with. Plenty of power esp. with washer mod and has some nice features like a click speed adjustment, trigger and a very comfortable platypus head which to hold. I like the G15 best - stoke not too long for tighter spots and not too short for larger panels.

Lumorales - You're going to get so many different responses. Rupes vs Flex vs Griot's. Good luck.

But on a serious note, they're all great machines. MT300 was my favorite (kind of still is) but I also use(d) BOSS 15, Rupes 21, and Flex. The Rupes, while not in use, feels closest to the MT300. What I mean, just holding it in your hands. Not actual polishing. Polishing with it is a different story.

That said, I reach for the 3401 more than anything these days (well, what little I polish. It's been a while). Reason? It spins. No worry as to whether or not it's stalling/spinning. It just does. Allows me to focus on the paint more.

If you're seriously considering the 3401 look at the Makita PO5000C for now or Rupes Mille if you don't mind waiting

If you want long throw ...21mm in either Mark II or G21 flavor
 
Sounds good. I was online and the Mille will be out in March. I’ll wait meanwhile I’ll keep I eyes open. Thanks

I got the Makita and love it
Can swap on a 3in
I believe it'll have the quicker correction due to more RPM

Even though it's already smooth
I think Mille will be the smoothest due to least mm throw.
Only thing I'd do to the mille out the box is upgrade the backing plate hold on screws with hex screws
 
Also keep in mind with forced DA 3401/PO5000C/Mille changing backing plate to smaller sizes makes the machine less agressive... more aggressive with the larger BP

With free spin D/A it's the opposite..smaller backing plate they become more agressive over stock size
 
A forced rotation tool, like the Flex 3401 is a different animal than any random orbital.

It was the next tool I bought after the rotary (way back in the day), and Porter Cable 7424xp. Then I got into the Rupes stuff. The Duetto overall is still my favorite.

That forced rotation Flex 3401 is kind of fun to use though. I had sold my first one, and recently bought another, and upon using it again, the strength and power is obvious. Where I feel the random orbitals are capable finesse machines, the 3401 feels like It's munching away at defects.

Strange as changing my 3401’s and Mille plate sizes have no effect on cutting ability. Rotary larger bp increases cut, DA smaller bp increases cut, gear driven makes no difference as cut remains the same regardless of bp.

Think of a large tire and a small tire and the revs per mile
275-60-15 has 743 RPM
225-60-15 needs 813 ..needs an extra 70 to accomplish same feet

Its a DA not a rotary, it orbits just like any other DA, the motion is not circular like a tyre or rotary. Your logic applies to a perfect circle.
 
Here’s a perfect eg. I had a deeper clear coat defect commonly referred to as a RID on a 4x4 I corrected last night. When I focused the edge of the pad over the defect I wasn’t getting the desired results. However placing it smack in the middle of the defect that is the centre of the pad over the defect I seem to be cutting better. The orbital motion even though gear driven didn’t rely on a larger outer circumference like a rotary does. Forget the Mille or the 5000c, there are more 3401 users as its been longer in the market. They will testify that they didn’t lose cut when using the LC 4” or Flex 4 3/8” over the 5.5” or 6” bp’s.
