Damp sanding headlights with a DA?

I don't know what to tell you as far as a setting number on a PC or something, but I always go slow on headlights. I only use enough speed to keep the disc turning while applying pressure and work pretty slow.

Perhaps it could be done faster, but it still doesn't take that much time, and I try to keep my removal uniform - going slow helps this. It also keeps you from taking more plastic than you wanted.

Just my $.02.

What speed should I use with the unigrit discs?

Fast speed. You want the disc spinning without stopping. More important for paint but the idea being for the abrasives in the disc to be moving over the surface, not merely vibrating against it.

I think the Griot's 3" Mini Polisher might be a better headlight sander than a full size DA Polisher since the 3" discs have smaller footprint which might make it easier to work on odd shaped headlight lenses.

I've always used speed 3-4 on my old G100 for doing headlights, I find that when running any faster than that things dry out too quickly and the discs load up with clear coat or polycarbonate slurry.

congrats on ur third thread on headlights in he pass coople of week......

Do you guys know if the Unitgrit backing plate will fit onto a Porter Cable Xp model? I am kind of tired of the hand sanding lol

Yes, they will. 3" or 6", but make sure you have the correct size backing plate. :dblthumb2:

Thanks Mark, I will be getting the 3" backing plate and sanding disks. This should save me some considerable time

I sanded some lenses with 500/800/1000/3000, them removed the scratches with a 3" MF cutting disc/D301. There's tons of little swirls in the lenses.......

I have gotten those before on paint. Try going over it again with 3000grit. I was able to remove them from paint with a little work with d300. I imagine they can be removed from headlights in the same manner.

Look for a PM

Did you use a DA to sand the lenses? Sounds like you may be getting pigtails...

I went back and did the process again, but this time with a Meg's hand pad and the unigrit discs. Much better results! No pig tails or swirls after polishing with MF cutting/M105.

Yes, I did use a DA, and I think you're right about the pigtails. Is it better to sand by hand?

I wouldn't say that... you just have to adjust your technique a bit so you don't get the pigtails. Either use a bit more water to make sure there's adequate lubrication, or make fewer passes before you stop and clean the slurry from the surface and sanding disc.

Just like everything else you have to work clean, it just takes some getting used to with a different procedure before you dial in your clean workflow. :props:
