Decibel Rating of Various Polishers

Very interesting and useful information. Thanks for doing this. It only reconfirms how important hearing protection is!!!!

Thanks for posting and for taking the time to do this test! Very cool!

Great test, very interesting......I wonder how much it would increase when put against a panel.

I agree everyone should wear hearing protection......take it from somebody that suffers from hearing loss....it can be very aggravating sometimes.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Here's the updated list with help from Mike.

The human hear is sensitive to different frequencies with the peak around 1.2 - 2 Khz so higher pitched tones will sound louder.

Just for gits and shiggles I walked around the back of a couple of CRJ-900s today while the APUs were running, iPad in hand running the above app. From the front of engine number one, around the tail (under the APU exhaust) to the front of engine number two. Ranged from 84 to 93 and back to 84 steady.

If I have the chance I'll try with the engines running on a 717 as it pulls in to the gate, as well as its APU after the engines shut down.

You would be surprise at how many people have some degree of hearing loss, yet think they have perfect hearing.

Whaaaat??

On a side note, has anyone seen if the grease inside the DA's need to be cleaned out and refilled over many hours of use? I'm sure it eventually breaks down and wondering if I need to take a peek inside my Griot's and if it's easy to do.

Having run multiple polishers - common sense tells me they will not cause hearing damage. Yes they may be close to being "too loud"; but can you point me to a single person who has had this issue???
