DFB's Soapy Notes

The thing about soaps is that there is a rated dilution (sometimes very vague like "1 cap per bucket') but you can always add more. For example, for Chem Guys for sometime they had ridiculous dilution ratios and I always used twice whatever they said. More soap can bump lubricity and cleaning power plus add more suds. Besides using more, I guess the soap may be more difficult to rinse.

Of course, I am sure the DIY washers use the glug method Pour in some soap and never measure anything.

You're right, I pour about 2 glups of the Soft Soap (non-Aloe) in a bucket then fill the rest with water.

“Soft Soap” meaning the Hand Soap?

You wash your car with bathroom hand soap?lol.

Ok DFB, I took your word for it. I’ve got me a bottle of Meguiars NXT Car Wash.

And I’ve got the perfect candidate for a wash.

Three additional soaps to add to the mix..........................

P&S Wide Open – I have to say, P&S make some great products, but soaps are not their specialty. Pearl is mediocre, Frostbite doesn’t have the cleaning power they claim, and while there is some charm to Inspiration Radiance, it comes across as a dated product. So, can Wide Open redeem the brand?

Wide Open was launched with a range of off-road specific products a few years ago. This soap was designed to be a high suds, high foaming product that can break down mud quicker and easier than the low-foaming Pearl. P&S have also included rust inhibitors to help protect “exposed metals or scratched paintwork”. Wide Open is termed “pH balanced”, but I tested it at about 8.9, which would explain where the superior mud-cleaning ability comes from. For reference, Pearl comes in at 7.5 and Frostbite 10.3.

Despite this being aimed at the off-road market, Wide Open can be used on any vehicle that needs a little more cleaning power. In that regard, Wide Open would be a similar in concept to Meguiar’s Hyper Wash. It will put down a thick layer of foam that holds onto the paint really well, which is a complete contrast to what Radiance and Pearl will do. The big surprise though was how bloody slick this soap feels, which is backed up with decent free rinsing properties. With a 946ml bottle of Wide Open sitting about $10 above the same size of Pearl, its money well spent as its far more concentrated, considerably slicker and will foam for days. If only it had a scent, it would be almost perfect. Wide Open is easily P&S’s best soap.

Lubrication – 8/10
Cleaning Ability – 9/10
Scent – Virtually undetectable
PH Level – 8.9 (measured)
Consistency – Runny
Overall Rating – 8/10

Koch Chemie Active Foam – This soap has been on the market for a few years now, but only in larger bottle sizes and priced out of the market. However, with a recent change in distribution, Active Foam is now much more attainable than before and is finally available in smaller 1-litre bottle sizes.

Within the KCx soap range, the pH 9.5 Active Foam sits as a happy medium between the gentle pH balanced GSF, and the sledgehammer Super Foam with its pH of 12.0. It also sits alongside Auto Shampoo with its pH of 9.0, but Active Foam is by far the better soap for a few key reasons……………

First of all, unlike Auto Shampoo, this soap actually foams! That foaming ability helps it sit on the paint for longer, in turn delivering superior cleaning ability before a wash mitt hits the paint. In that regard, I've found Active Foam an excellent pre-wash snow foam, it would make a great winter soap for that reason. Active Foam is also a great wheel cleaner, being much nicer to work with than a typical alkaline or iron-remover type wheel cleaner.

But it’s the scent that will hook you, it’s heaven on earth! The sandalwood scent is at its best during and after foaming, and it will linger for hours after………………its extremely addictive.

Lubrication – 9/10
Cleaning Ability – 10/10
Scent – Sandalwood, simply delightful
PH Level – 9.5 (claimed)
Consistency – Runny
Overall Rating – 10/10

Koch Chemie Ceramic Effect Shampoo – This soap has only just hit the market, which is a competitor to products like Carpro Hydr02 Foam, P&S Inspiration Radiance and Gyeon Bathe+. Like those, CES provides cleaning ability and lubrication, while leaving behind a glossy protective layer in the process. KCx even suggest CES will provide UV protection.

I’m not the biggest fan of this style of soap, mainly because you compromise the cleaning ability and foam quality, while only getting a minor gloss/slickness/hydrophobic improvement……………..jack of all trades, master of none. However, CES seems very well-rounded, easily one of the best of its type on the market in offering moderate cleaning ability, decent slickness and some very impressive hydrophobics. And like most KCx products, the cherry-almond scent of CES smells lovely. However, this soap was not designed to be foamed, which means using it as a traditional bucket wash only. Also, don’t expect CES to offer heavy-duty cleaning ability, in situations like that, you would pre-treat with something like Active Foam or Bilt Hamber Touch-less beforehand.

I really like this soap. The gloss, slickness and hydrophobic properties it provides would put some spray sealants to shame, let alone other soaps of its type. As an occasional-use topper to your coating or sealant, CES is certainly a very nice product to use.

Lubrication – 8/10
Cleaning Ability – 6/10
Scent – 8/10 (cherry-almond)
PH Level – 6.0 (claimed)
Consistency – Runny
Overall Rating – 9/10

Active Foam is on my list! I've heard good things about Primus 2.0 PH 11

Or do you think PH 11 is a little OTT 🤔

A pH 11 product is fine for occasional use, just don't use it each and every time.

Epic thread. I think Reset is still my favorite after all this time. I have 5L of GSF that has been great but I really hate the scent. Adam’s blue for whatever reason is still the best one in the sun for me.

Adam's Blue Car Shampo incredibly well priced for you guys in the US, it could easily sell for at two to three times that price.

I ordered the new Cerakote Shampoo. I'm curious how it is. Was only $14.

How would you guys rank Adams Blue against Meguiars Hyperwash? They are roughly the same price for a gallon on Amazon, but the Meguiars is slightly cheaper at HF.

If you need the cleaning ability, Hyper Wash is going to offer you more grunt due to its higher pH. I'd also say Hyper Wash produces thicker foam. However, I've also found Hyper Wash isn't free rinsing, basically its only major drawback.

The Adam's is just as slick, and more friendly in the sun due its pH neutral formulation. It's foam production can be variable, but in general is slightly runnier and much easier to rinse.

For regular use on well-maintained cars, I'd swing towards the Adam's as it will be gentler. If you need that extra cleaning power, Hyper Wash is a nice middle ground between pH neutral and those ultra-heavy alkaline pre-wash soaps.

Thanks! Hyperwash is my go-to wash soap, but I'm always curious when hearing rave reviews about other products from multiple people.

I do appreciate the better cleaning power of Hyper Wash when dealing with constant bug issues during the summer. I also appreciate the fact my coatings seem to hold up better and I never felt the need to do a decon wash when I use Hyper Wash. I'm using 3D Pink right now, and have been pretty underwhelmed with it for several reasons, but cleaning power has been one of the major reasons.

I'm currently on 3d pink and IMO it's horrible!
You need 4 times the amount to even see foam in the bucket or foam cannon....glad I only bought the small bottle

Funny you mention it, I only tried 3D Pink because of others saying it was a good soap. And I suppose it is "good", but far far far from great. Which leaves me wondering perhaps those who rave about a product are those who refuse to try new or different products.

As for 3D Pink, I found it pretty underwhelming, and despite the claims, it doesn't foam. It actually reminds me of P&S Pearl, again, a lot of people say it's good, quite often followed by its "great value for money". Yep, Pearl and 3D Pink are inexpensive...................................but you need to use 3 to 4 times the amount of soap per application. That's not great value at all.

Frankly, with sooooo many great soaps on the market, why settle for mediocrity?

I'm not sure how it compares price wise, but if you can, I'd urge you to give NV Snow a try. It's currently sold out via NV USA and Parks Car Care, but you will find it does everything Hyper Wash can do, but with a few key improvements -

- NV Snow is rated at pH neutral, but when I tested it in both undiluted and the recommended dilution, it registered a similar pH level to Hyper Wash (9.0 - 9.5). This means that like Hyper Wash, Snow cleans VERY well.

- Both have exceptional foaming ability.

- Slickness of Snow is on par, if a little better than Hyper Wash.

- NV Snow is much, much easier to pour compared to the syrupy thickness of Hyper Wash.

- NV Snow is considerably easier to rinse, whereas Hyper Wash tends to reactivate and requires more time to properly rinse free.

- The scent is much more modern. (I know that doesn't alter the performance, but is worth noting)

NOTE - There are two versions of Snow. The Snow described above is the one you want, Snow+ is a pH of 12 for stripping and decon washes.

NOTE - Don't read this as me discrediting Hyper Wash, it's one of their best products and one that I have in my rotation.

That is exactly why I tried it. At the time, it kept popping up in soap discusions. My mistake was buying a gallon jug right about the time my family fleet shrunk by half. It's taking me forever to kill it off. I'm nearing the bottom of the jug and it can't come soon enough. Lesson learned: buy the small bottle when trying something out.

Sadly it looks like its only available from Nv USA right now and it's twice as expensive as Hyper Wash for a gallon jug. I think that is my biggest hang-up for many of the good soaps out there. I can't justify the price for many of them. This NV Snow is twice as expensive, CarPro Reset is THREE TIMES the price of Hyper Wash. I keep a small bottle of CarPro Lift on hand to do a decon wash, but use it sparingly.

I actually kinda liked 3D Pink. I wouldn’t say it excelled in direct sun, but when it came to suds & cleaning power I had zero complaints. I didn’t have a foam cannon yet so I can only speak on good suds via bucket washing but only decided to move on from it based on better value by far compared the Megs Hyper Wash.

I think I went through 2 gallons of 3D Pink.

As far as Meguiars NXT Car Wash, I’m somewhat shocked that this 64oz. bottle still has this much remaining after 6 months. I’ve also been running Megs Hyper Wash during this same time, but regardless I have no idea how this NXT is still has plenty left in the bottle considering the extra amount that’s required in the foam cannon.
Half year and therefore still some left.

Will I buy it again? Not sure, I’d strongly consider giving Meguiars Gold Class a shot for nostalgia sake before grabbing another bottle of NXT mostly based on how much is required to produce shaving cream foam.
I want the kind of foam that can bury a cat for a few minutes if I desire to do so.lol.
