Did I burn though my clear coat?

I'm totally kidding, thought I would share with you guys my work on my car this spring and summer.

So to start out my old bumper had a crack in it due to someone backing into me in the driveway. My hood had rock chips and primer marks in the clear coat. I also had a new trunk to paint so here is my pics.

Sanded the hood down to the original paint

Then I flipped the hood over to do the inside of the hood while I was doing paint. This is the hood primed and ready for the red to be laid down.

Here is the BMW chili red laid down

So then I had this crazy idea to make a design on the inside of the hood.

Here is the design all masked off and ready for black

The black painted and the paper torn off.

And finally the mask pealed off and the clear coat sprayed.

So then I proceeded to prime and sand down the hood, trunk and bumper.

And after spraying red, pearl, and clear coat this is how they turned out

So while I was painting there was some parts that also needed to be painted black so I pulled some other parts like the rain tray and the rear valance off to be painted black

So after all this I had been rushing to get her done for a car show. So this is how she turned out.

So the car show was a good hour and 45 minuets away from my house so how did I protect my 1 week old paint? Well here it is

Some good ol painters tape did the trick and it pealed right off with no residue left

As of this week I am prepping for a large VW show at the end of the month so I did a full detail on the car.

Started with a 2 bucket wash and then a full swirl correction

Here you can see some of the swirls in the paint, there a little hard to see with the pearl but you can kind of see them.

Used my griots d/a for the first time doing this

Coming from using just a rotary polisher I was very pleased with the power of the d/a. 100% satisfied with my purchase.

The final product after the swirl remove

and no more swirls

After all of this I polished off with Menzerna 4500.

Then on to my next step of adding the glaze. Used CG Blacklight.

Then protected it all with CG Petes 53

And finally the the fruits of my labors, the water droplets the morning after

By the way all these photos were taken with my iPhone so I apologize for any crappy photos.

Let me k now what you guys think!

Oh man that blue tape on the front made me think of that epic cross-country thread on whatever forum that was.

How did you mask the "crazy design" on the underside of the hood? I thought it was just tape but it's not uniform width.

Haha, I kept looking and couldn't figure it out. Then I started reading lol

Nice Job :props:

Awesome job! The paint after the Blacklight is insanely glossier than without or it's just the different angles messing with my eyes, lol.

Great job. What are you using to lay down the paint?

I like the design. Looks like arteries.

Thanks guys it was a lot of hard work, so for the design I used a vinyl mask it's a sheet of vinyl that was cut to fit the flat parts, for laying down the paint I did it in my parents garage with a devilbis finish line gun I also used a cheap harbor freight gun just to spray the primer

Awesome job :xyxthumbs:

Love the underhood design, and that red with the fleck is just gorgeous.

Thanks guys, I wanted something to stand out under the hood so that's what I went with

I was happy to see that you sprayed in the garage. When the picture of the pieces laid out in the (what looks to be) living room...a bit of panic set in (LOL).

Good job!

Bill

Hey I was wondering, whats the procedure for applying the clear after the base coat?

Did you wet sand and polish the base coat?

Did you have to rough up the base in order for the clear to stick?

So after you spray your base coat you can spray your clear coat right on, if you have runs or anything you can sand them down with 900 grit sand paper, I wouldn't ever polish the base coat you don't want any kind of contaminants in between the base and clear coat, and if you spray your base coat and don't come back to it till a week later I would scuff it up with some 900 grit sand paper because base coat fills in 400 grit scratches and clear coat fills in 900 grit scratches

Okay got to love a guy who resprays his car for a car show. NOW THATS DETAILING! You did an amazing job not only painting but detailing. Car looks great. The underside of the hood is even growing on me.

What manufacturer paint did you use? Solvent or water based?

I think you owe your parents a dinner for gving up their garage for this project! Awesome post thank for sharing it.
