Dear master master of detailing, need ya'll help.

Recently ive been practicing on a black clear coated hood as im actually scared and worried when i detail black cars. Why? i fear the holograms....

So i decided to practice last night.
My gears are,
Makita 9227c
Wool pad that came with the makita
LC Yellow Cutting Pad
LC white polishing pad
M105
Optimum Hyper Polish
Optimum Hyper Compound
and lots of MF towels

I started with the wool pad using M105, managed to cut off all the swirls and RIDs, had a deep clear gloss look, but under proper halogen lights holograms appeared. Makita Speed 1 spread to Speed 3 cut

So i decided to cut abit more by using LC Yellow cutting pad and Optimum Hyper Compound. Just a light pass and i check again. yes holograms minimized but it was still quite obvious when under halogen lights. Makita Speed 1 spread and Speed 3 cut

Then i moved on to LC White polishing pad with Optimum's Hyper Polish, did 1 pass on the test spot. Makita Speed 1 spread, speed 2 polish, then back to speed 1 to finish. My polishing technique was moving inch by inch left to right following the makita spinning direction --> then complete left to right i moved to up to down. it was a very systematic and straight foward polish. Then i wiped off the remaining product.

Between each compound i washed with ONR No rinse wash, after compounding i washed it again before i applied any polish. After i polished i check for holograms and they reveal again. Did i miss something here? Im sure my posture and my pad was flat downas i constantly checked when i am polishing or cutting.

then after seeing holograms still remain, i decided to try to polish again with a smaller working area. before was inch by inch, now i tried to polish half inch by half inch. but still smaller holograms appear.

please advice me..

After some research i realise i need a finishing pad. but previously when i detailed another test there was no holograms...am i doing something wrong or is my pad's problem or my posture?

much advice would be welcomes help~ and thx

I have the exact same fear with makita as a used the makita for the first time like a year ago a real noob which i am too, your question is really common...here is the solution:

- No matter how good a detailer is, they will still need a polisher that can fine polish better than a makita, for example a DA PC or Flex...

- Just like any handy man, the more screw driver you have the better you can accomplish the job

yea, but i know it can be done just i cant simply accomplish it well =/

Practice! The detailers that can finish out a car using their rotary have been doing this for years and have a lot of practice. I can't seem to finish out with my rotary (I haven't done a whole car yet). So I always go back to my PC when I do my final polish. Always leaves a hologram free finish.

Keep practicing and you'll eventually get the right technique, pad/product combo.

Rotaries are much more difficult to master than the newer dual action units. They take quite a bit of time, practice, and experimentation to overcome some of these obstacles. This is the reason I use my Flex 3401 dual action polisher after initial compounding.

The only way I can remove these completely with a rotary is to use a non cutting pad with a fine polish. I've tried many combinations of pads and products, hell, that's way I have them.. I've tried Meguiar's M205 with a Lake Country CCS gray and blue pad and then went with Menzerna PO85RD with a blue and even a red pad giving me great reasilts.

yea im currently practicing everyday on my scrap metal hood for 3 hours everyday after work...im determine! thanks bobbyG for that combination, will get the pads and try ur technique out!

let me know what works...I,m in the same boat with you...just bought a 9227 makita and am determined to learb to use it well

That's not really accurate. So many great detailers use only a rotary. Others use both, but it's not a hard and fast rule that they use both. Most don't.

That's what I was going to say. You can use a finishing polish with a rotary without causing ill effects, it just takes practice.

Well, let me tell you. Being someone who lives and dies by the makita...it is a new ball game every time products and pads are changed.

What I mean by that, is that there's not really any specific method to getting it done right. It's a lot of trial and error. I mean, unless someone uses your specific line of pads and product with the Makita every day, it's gonna be tough to guide you.

I will say though...that you will absolutely not get the results you want without a finishing pad. You might want to try some 205 with a finish pad. I get great results with it. Although, I do find 205 to work better with a DA than a rotary. Try 85rd...that might help you out.

Also, don't expect any black finish to come out without holograms when using a wool pad. You just have to work in levels. Start aggressive, less aggressive, then the least aggressive to finish.
