Did my first oil change today! Pics

For me it is just a cheap insurance policy to change my oil once a year even if I don’t reach the 7500 mileage point BMW suggests for my car. I also like taking it to the dealership so they can give it a good inspection every 12 months. Just part of my OCD.

I’m Telling you I work at a dealership. You got a engine that goes and no maint history at the dealer, well you gotta have proof or it will be denied. After market warranties can be even worse. Seen them deny claims for just about anything.

Some places may not care but really the dealer is supposed to be protecting the manufacturer as the front line.

Chances are if you do actually maintain it you will not have a problem in the warranty period anyways.

This has nothing to do with magnussen moss act or aftermarket modifications. It’s just oil change maint in the talk of engine problem in the warranty period.

Thanks man, feels good

I didn't but the tires are pretty new. Less then 7500 I think, probably like 5000 miles on them. Do you just rotate all 4 tires? Next I'm going to do breaks and rotors

Thanks, I couldn't really fit under there plus I already had the creeper. The heavy duty ones were only 50 bucks. I could of got the next size down for 40. Watching a video I thought I was going to have to take the whole shroud off.

You should actually check that. I watched a video and thought mine had the same shroud. It does but there are access holes in mine that weren't in the video.

As far as tire rotation...if it's front wheel drive cross the rear tires when you move them to the front and move the fronts straight back. If it's all wheel drive cross the fronts when you move them to the rear and bring the rear tires straight forward.

I just started changing mine. It saves me about 70.00. The car takes 10 quarts of synthetic blend or full synthetic.

What car and motor take 10qts of oil? Most cars are 5-6...she must be a big motor.

Just genuinely curious as I drive a duramax and it's 10 qts but it's also a diesel...figured I'd ask as it made me go hmmm

I would be looking up what kind of oil to use. There are different kinds of specs for different kind of motors. And if you use a lower kind of specs and even a higher specs than recommended. You can damage the motor in the long run. The same is with the use of regualar, synthetic blend or full synthetic oil to use. Motors has different oil chanels and oil pumps and how they lube different internal parts. If use a to thick of oil the motor does not get the lubrication and cooling ability it need to have. And the same goes for a to thin of oil.

You have often a range of the viscosity depending on the environment you live in. 5w-30 the first number is in the winter weather and the second is in the warm conditions.
Then you have the standard to use in your motor. Api or sae or sl is what to look for and some has the high mileage oils standard. If your car has the regualar oil from the beginning stick with that. And if it's synthetic oil I would stick to that. Just don't switch between them or mix them. So look up what standard and viscosity your motor needs.

A tip when changing your oil by your self is to buy a new brass shroud to the oil plug. As they are made for useing only one time. That's why you are seeing many oil dripping from the oil plug.

You don’t have to have it done at a dealer but if you had an engine issue they will ask for oil change receipts and your interval may not meet what they like

I had an engine recall, as far as I know they did not care about that although it is a warranty requirement. Maybe it depends on the engine issue. I bought my car used though so I have no way to know what the person before me did with it for 2 years.

It's a good feeling doing basic maintenance on your vehicles. You get to buy the materials you want and at a price you want, too.

The problem I have is that I have a 300C SRT8 that rides low and has that bottom splash guard with a ton of screws holding it on which is a pain to remove. Had to build my own low profile ramps just to get a jack under there and it's a PITA to get that splash guard off.

The other approach I take with my cars is to[b take my own oil and filter to the local quick lube.[/b] $10/$15 for them to pop the plug and drain is worth it sometimes, especially when crunched for time or in the winter.
That's a great idea if they will do it for you. I changed mine basically because I didn't want to deal with taking it to the scrubs at my local jiffy lube. Last time the kid spilled oil all over my engine. That was when I had a junk box. Now that I detail I don't even want them touching it.

My warranty and free oil changes for the stealership is up and I also dont want them touching it unless I absolutely have to. Last time the oil mechanic leaned up on to the front fender with his dirty jeans and belt buckle to take the mileage off the window sticker. I didn't even realize the new oil and filter I used would allow me to go so long without an oil change. That was just a bonus

No they cannot force you to prove maintenance has been done. And No I don't have to keep invoices, which actually doesn't prove anything any way. It also doesn't prove the materials purchased were used on the vehicle in question. I've had numerous warranty claims over the past 25+ years and never once have I been asked to prove I maintained the vehicle by providing receipts etc. Like I said, that must be a deal in your country.

No it's not just his country. You are only 1 person in 1 state. Do you know how many people own cars in this country? The manufacturer can absolutely void the warranty if they think a given issue was caused by failure to properly maintain a vehicle. Look at any warranty agreement.

My old 2006 Northstar took 7.5 quarts(4.6l), Wifes Yukon takes 8 qrts(5.3l) and I think my son in laws 2017 ZL1 Camaro(6.2l) takes 10 qrts

Man your right (I looked it up) that Camaro takes 10 quarts. That's alot of oil. I'm sure it calls for synthetic so that would be roughly a $75 diy oil change I wonder what the dealer charges

Gotta agree with Mark on this one, fellas.

How are they to prove you did/didn't change your oil "on a timely basis"?

And this is from a guy that has sent hundreds of oil samples to labs to check for babbit (failing bearing) evidence. (Not once in a bearing failure did the insurance company question the oil change frequency. And you know if they could, they would.)

There is NO way for anyone to tell when your last oil change was. Not oil color, content, or consistency.

I can believe the 6.2 takes that much. My 6.6 duramax takes 10. It gets 5w-40 synthetic and a Mobil 1 filter every 5k regardless or once a year if it doesn't hit 5k. Cost me $65 each time and about 15 min of my time.
