DIY LED Work Light (much better than halogen!)

Thanks so much OP and everyone, got 2 stands and 2 double light holders on each and they are great.

Are black cars with metallic flake in the paint an exception to this rule, or is something up with my eyes :dunno:

I've always found metal flake, in most colors, to hide the swirls. And without sounding like I'm sending you to the eye doctor, it does take a little time to "train" your eye to see the defects hidden in all of that flake. That being said, it's easy enough to add a cheap halogen spot light to your arsenal and use both.

Great write, valuable info.thanks

So I notice that the original products listed are no longer available/listed on Amazon. There are a ton of different dual light umbrellas, stands, and light bulbs. What would you recommend if you were to update all three items?

Anyone?

If I search "dual bulb holder" on amazon, I still get the Neweer dual bulb holders I used when I just built mine? Also they have a 6 ft tripod for $20. As far as bulbs, the hyperion ones talked about at the end of the thread here are the way to go - Great light quality and very light for what it is.

I just bought the dual bulb holder, was $14. I have a large stock pile of manfrotto light stands (way overkill for this), and have yet to make my way to Home Depot for bulbs... but I don't think you can go wrong with anything from amazon as long as its a dual bulb holder. I'm not sure what you're talking about with Umbrellas though.

If you wanted to do a 4 bulb setup on one stand, you'll need one of these too:

Otherwise you're good to go! Right now I use one of these and a $25 costco 4' led tube setup (think fluorescent replacement). If you can swing it, I think another light stand would come in handy. I suppose it all comes down to what kind of lighting you already have in your work space.

Let us know how it goes!

Looks like there might be something even better. Larry did a video about the Scangrip lights but that is a very, very expensive tool. The DIY LED work light as built here has served me more than well and I'm glad I choose it over halogen

I haven't read the whole 36 pages of this thread, but I think another answer may be found in an unusual place. Although I haven't been involved in several years, it may be worth checking into mobile DJ lighting. A "flat par" or LED wash light with a stand would be perfect for sitting on the floor and could also be hung from a tripod if you wanted it up high. The last ones I saw were full RGB color and could produce just about any color under the rainbow and completely cool to the touch. Not sure about the temp range on the white color though.

this question is for anyone... does the light stand on the first page extend upwards very high?

Surprisingly, yes. It's at home right now so I can't say exactly how high, but I think it goes to like 6 feet, maybe higher? It at least gets high enough to shed some light on a Q5 roof.

When I ordered mine it was out of
stock so I ordered the newer 7ft. model.
It extends to 8ft. 2in. fully extended so I
would think the 6ft. would extend to 7ft.

one more quick question... is a one bulb/single mount (pictured below) sufficient to show defects? i would like to get a boom stand tripod and keep the weight down without having to use a sandbag/weight...
