DIY LED Work Light (much better than halogen!)

Agreed, these lights are the BOMB!!! I absolutely love them. I have a set made up on a tripod and a boom stand. Also I just recently added three overhead in the ceiling of my garage, really lights the joint up. They rock, thanks again to Zach!!

Dang! Nice garage. A guy could really get inspired having such a nice workspace. Totally jealous. :props:
 
Now there's something I hadn't thought of. I have two eight foot FT96 fixtures and was about to rip out the Sheetrock to run some new circuits, seal the air ducts and reinsulate. I was going to move the boxes for the overhead fixtures and split/double into eight four-footers. Now I'm thinking I can just add a couple of boxes over each bay and use the PAR38s.

Very cool garage!
 
Got my light stand and the bulbs identified by the OP and now I can see things on my car I never knew were there! How am I supposed to get all that junk out of the emblem and panel gaps???? lol :buffing:
 
Ooh, I didn't get the clamp-on fixture. I should put that on my Xmas wishlist!
 
Just a heads-up: stopped by Lowe's today. All they had in stock was one discounted, re-packed (ie: returned) 1400 Lm Utilitech PAR-38 bulb for $27.96. I was told that they are discontinued and would no longer be stocked.

I ended up getting a matched pair of the similar, 1400 Lm, 5000 K Sylvania floods for $33.67 each.

How do the Sylvania's compare?

Im so glad I found this thread, I have tired countless numbers of holagon and led work lights with stands. I have never been satisfied with any of them. One reason im not satisfied is the stands, they are always weak and not made well imo. How do these stands compare, are the well made, storage, and sturdy?

These stands are exactly what you'd expect for <$20... They're cheap. With that being said, they work fine for me.

If you want a very sturdy light stand it'll cost you over $100 on its own.

ha! nothing yet. still debating the options. i like the idea that Tremblay had with the boom stand.

i'd need that, this, a couple of these and these. i am just debating whether or not to get a more robust stand since that will be the core of this whole thing.

Thanks. I ordered the stand, sockets and side clip today...getting lights tmrw at Lowes. For stand stability, I'll have third leg pointed back/perpendicular to car with sand bag on it (based on feedback). Only remaining issue will be tilting lights...doesn't sound like sockets like to move/swivel.

yeah i think weighing the legs down will be crucial. i tend to be into things that are overbuilt or higher quality than necessarily required (which means extra money) so i have to give this some thought.
 
What to use since Lowes is out of Utilitech 20-Watt (90W Equivalent) Daylight 150661

I have bought of all the pieces per Zach's specifications with the 2 sets of light stands, cowboy studio gorilla clamp , and the Dr. Pain's recommended cowboy studio boom stand for the horizontal panel lighting.

I have one problem that is Lowes online or in any nearby stores have the Utilitech bulbs recommended. I have 2 options for bulbs one from Home Depot the Ecotec 120W Equivalent Day Light (5000K) PAR38 LED Flood Light Bulb at $33.97 or the Menards Sku# 3531731 5000K at $24.98 . I am amateur detailer and due 3-4 cars per year so I am thinking about going with shorter warranty less expensive bulbs.

I think the question with the 5 year warranty bulb one must ask is what must you due to get a new bulb from the company that backs it? If you have to ship it back to them and or keep your packaging then it might be a moot point.

I was wondering if anybody has used the bulbs from Menards?

I have about week till I get everything and want these bulbs ready for when I do my car with PolishAngel Cosmic coating. I will post some pictures of the car after I get it done.

Thanks for this great thread and I realize with this type of illumination to not expect perfection under these amazing lights.
