DIY LED Work Light (much better than halogen!)

With rubber cap was the 1st photo, 2nd photo is as far as it would go without rubber cap. This photo is raised up a bit without rubber cap

That's fine. As long as you get it snug it won't go anywhere. Gravity does most of the work :)

I predict a surge in the camera light industry here soon with all the people I have seen picking up this thread here and other places. You really nailed this one.

Ah, yes.... that's already happened after this thread was created. You'll see versions of this light used all around the world. Kind of cool.

Any input for 3000 k or 4000k bulbs, I figured I can use 1 5000k and reserve the other bulb holder for a different temperature.

I've found 5000k to be the most clear and revealing. It's basically pure white. I tend to feel like a bluer or yellower temp is distracting, but maybe that's just me.

Hi, new here,
Great forum! I ordered these Robot Check bulbs and will report back on results. Just got them in the mail today.

I ordered these bulbs

TorchStar bulbs, about $15 on Amazon
5000k color
1280 lumens
Single bulb and uses 18W. For some reason the link above says "robot check"

I just tested the TorchStar bulbs and WOW. Very bright and shows the detail I wanted. I tested against white paint (which is the worst to spot swirls) and found it best if they were about 45 degrees against the paint to my eyes. If someone is interested in pics, I can put some up.

I just recieved mine in the mail this weekend and I want to thank you very much for this DIY. The only thing I did not follow to the letter was when it came down to the stand. For the money, the one you posted had lots of reviews about how flimsy they were and I didn't feel like dealing with that. I like to make one purchase and be done with it. So I got the lightstand that came with a boom arm and let me tell you, I am one happy camper.

I'm really liking that light stand with the boom arm as well as the price. Just wanted to see if you had any complaints about this stand after using it for a little while. Also what side mount light is that?

Side mount is a basic c-clamp (linked to previously in the thread) with the same dual bulb mount attached to it.

Hi Zack

I’ve found some information which I think will help with searching
for the right lamp. The term single diode kept tripping me up. After
many searches, I found something called “cob arrays” which is a group of
diodes tightly packed in one cluster. Light emanating from one source rather than
multiple sources. When looking for a lamp in their description, look
for one with cob technology but make sure the cob source is a single source and not multiple which I believe you’re referring to.

Hope this will help others

Thanks
Jim

Thanks for the enclosed tips and tricks guys! I'm so fed up with the store bought halogen spot lights, that overheat the bulb sockets and melt, rendering them useless ... Looking forward to some longevity out of this set-up.

I've been using this setup for 2 years now and have not had a bulb failure... I used to replace halogen bulbs 3-4 times per year. Can't beat these IMO!

i have had the Sylvania par38 daylight 5000k bulbs in my version of Zach's light, which has two rows of bulbs...but wanted to mention that i have bought Hyperikon par38s from Amazon and they are really nice...and cheap as heck...and much lighter weight-wise than the Sylvanias, which could be beneficial with these cheap fixtures we are all running on our stands. i am running the Hyperikon jawns in some RAB motion sensor lights i just put up. the ones i have are 4000k, not 5000k like my Sylvanias, but i have been knee deep in different types of lighting in my new house and i'm confident you would be pleased with their 5000k bulbs, which happen to be on sale right now for $12.20 a bulb in four packs. that's really cheap imo.

Great info guys, thanks for sharing. Has anyone found a better alternative to the plastic dual-bulb holders most people seem to buy from Amazon? I would not mind spending a little more for something that lasts and does not pull the socket from the holder especially when using the heavy Utilitech 23-Watt bulbs.

I would like to know this too. One socket of the bulb holder already broke :/

Does anyone notice with the swivel head, the light will keep spinning? Not so much tighten full but tighten enought to hold it. on the two I have the left ones will keep spinning, but the right heads will lighten like a normal.
