Dodo Lime Prime vs. Menzerna PO85rd

I said 205 could do the same(not always and not all soft paint). I was basically saying that it had the same kind of abrasives, and that 85RD would finish down better on softer paint with diminishing abrasives.

I'm just stating what I have had happen to me, so decide what you want. I can't finish down my wifes car with 205 or lime prime. Other cars work well with both.
Lou, no matter what car I'm working on with 205, I alway's finish down with 85rd. If it's a one stepper I make it a 2 stepper.

I gave up on 205. I'll mostly finish with 106FA or 85RD. Diminishing is my abrasive of choice for finishing. Now, 105 works great for corrections.:xyxthumbs:

I was basically answering the OP's question, 85RD vs lime prime. Point being, 85RD in my opinion finishes better without the added worry about paint softness. If you know lime prime works on a car, then lime is easier to use(with minor corrections). I don't even neeed to tape off my car using it, and little to no dusting.

Baaaaad experience with Lime Prime on my Black Escalade. Polished to a gread shine, went over with LP, marks all over the place. Went over it again with 85rd, ahhh, that's better. Gave LP to the kid down the street.

Hi guys...just came across this thread. i am still pretty new to detailing. Could any of you explain exactly the difference between diminishing and non-diminshing abrasives. And, is there a thread that might suggest, which polishes are best for different types of vehicles. I read that one of you said the Dodo marred your toyota.
Thanks

What's the difference between DAT and SMAT

SMAT - Super Micro Abrasives Technology

DAT - Diminishing Abrasives Technology

DAT - Diminishing Abrasives Technology
Diminishing Abrasives are a category of abrasives that actually break down, pulverize and disintegrate into nothingness as you work them against the paint.

For example, a diminishing abrasive will start out a certain size and/or shape, then under pressure over time as they are worked against the paint they will actually breakdown or break apart. This means they start out aggressive and thus aggressively abrading the paint, as they are worked under pressure over time they begin to break down and as they breakdown their aggressiveness level is reduced to the point that when correctly worked they are completely broken down and all you have left is a mixture of spent or used-up diminishing abrasives and the carrying agent or base they were embodied in to start with. There's also a certain amount of removed paint in this resulting mixture.

SMAT - Super Micro Abrasives Technology
Super Micro Abrasives are as the name states microscopic in size and do not break down like diminishing abrasives. While they may not breakdown like a diminishing abrasive, there does come a point where there effectiveness falls off in performance, my guess is that this is a cumulative effect of the base formula they are embodied in dissipates while particles of removed paint build up in the residue adulterating or diluting their effectiveness.

Just to note, this same adulterating or diluting effect takes place with any abrasive product because as the abrasive remove small particles of paint, these small particle of paint join into the mixture thus changing the ratio or percentage of abrasives to the base formula.

What's the practical difference? (Click below for the rest of the article)

Woah! M205 does use SMAT! I highly doubt M205 will marr Honda's paint at all. I am pretty sure plenty of people have used M205 as their last polish on Honda and Toyota's plain with wonderful results.

M205, regardless of pad or technique, leaves a haze in my super-soft Honda paint. I haven't had issues on any car with medium to hard paint, though. I always have to follow with 3M Ultrafine since my paint hates PO85RD.

Here is Dodo's response from my email asking if Lime Prime uses diminishing or non diminishing abrasives......

"Diminishing. It is a fine cut product and finishes down (non-diminishing abrasives are typically used in heavy cut products)."

What does 85rd do to you car Matt?

I hope 205 won't leave haze on my 07 SI :(

The paint on my '07 Si wasn't as soft as the S2k...it was much easier to work with too. That car was Fiji Blue Pearl FYI.

PO85RD gums up and the paint won't let go of the polishing oils. It gets very sticky, and no matter what I use on it, it streaks everywhere and turns into a huge mess. I tried DA, rotary, different pads, more/less product, different speeds, and it always does the same thing. The only way I could solve the problem was to go over the whole car with Meguiar's Body Solvent. 3M and Meguiar's polishes work fine, though. FYI I've never had this happen on any other paint but my own...and I blame it on the super soft tinted clearcoat.
