So I'm about to detail my 2002 pearl white acura tl, and was wondering how I could restore my door trim outer seal (I don't know if thats the proper term). It looks to have had a some type of clear coat or plastic protectant thats come off, exposing rubber I assume since it absorbed turtle wax's black trim product like no other. I was wondering if anyone could give me some recommendations on what products to use to restore this.

Clean the rubber and try Ultima Tire and Trim or Gummi Pflege.

Hey Kurt, you out there? Would that plastic polish you use work?

After you get it right I would seal with Ultima T&TG.

I have wondered this too for my cars. Are you sure its rubber? There is always removal and re coating as an option if your not able to bring it back.

On a lot of cars, this is painted plastic. You could have something more like clear coat failure. Is the material hard or soft? If hard (likely), you may need a different approach.

Try tapping on it with your fingernail. Depending on the sound you should be able to tell if it is rubber, plastic, or maybe even painted metal.

I agree, check the material. I thought mine were doomed and went after them with DA and M105 Soft Buff Yellow/M205 Yellow, then sealed.

It's hardened plastic, and does look like a clear coat failure.

I thought it was plastic, but since you said it was rubber I recommend something for rubber. Try buffing it out with a 4" pad and 105/205 and then seal.

My thoughts EXACTLY polish it then seal. It works, did it to a Lincoln LS and it turned out great.

It should be fine sealing it with the Ultima Tire and Trim right?

Not familiar with that but since it is a smooth surface I would just use a sealant of your choice. Klasse would be a good one, in my case I used Jetseal 109 but any sealant and/or wax should work. Are you sure it is plastic? The Lincoln I did it to was metal. I dont think it was painted either-more like a "dyed" metal...

Either way any sealant should work. But as with anything do a test spot on the bottom corner closest to the window just to be sure.

The tire and trim stuff you are talking about, is it a dressing I guess? If so I think a dressing would streak a bit or may finish out with an uneven look. But if you try it I dot think it will hurt anything....it should wipe off if it produces undesirable results.

I'd try using a paint cleaner on it first. Meguiar's Ultimate Compound is good, and readily available at Wal-Mart for around $8 or so. Use a microfiber or terry applicator for extra bite. Here is a 50/50 shot of the side trim on a 1996 Ford Explorer after Ultimate Compound and Klasse AIO.

It's a lot less noticeable further away, but I feel like I should remove the remaining original clear coat since you cant still see it in the "After" picture as the darker black, and then seal it. Maybe I'll try some M105/205 later and then seal it.

M105 isn't going to make a big difference over UC.

That was hand applied with a microfiber applicator. Wouldn't it make a difference if I used a flex xc on it with an yellow/orange pad?
