Ok, I am not doing this, but I saw a guy on his detailing site use dry ice to have fog "roll down" a panel of a vehicle he was working on.... um, what the ef??????

What is the purpose of this?

I have read an article about working on self-healing paint that used refrigerated compounds and ice to cool the panel. The idea being that the lower temps do not allow the self-healing function to happen and allow for accurate polishing of the paint.

Found the Thread:

I've used dry ice to remove sound deadening from panels but not yet found a use for it detailing.

Here's an image:
Apparently it's called a Polar Jet?

DetailKitty, you beat me to it. You can go on the Polarjet site and it actually shows the smaller version is designed for vehicles.

HUMP

Apparently it is very effective and paint safe.

The principle of sublimation works to "explode" dirt and grime off of surfaces.

The engine cleaning video is particularly interesting.

The system is expensive and requires dry ice for operation.

Holy crap I want one of these!!!!!!!!

It's like I just watched porn :drool::drool::drool:

IIRC when this became known some years ago, there was interest in the community in using it, except the hardware costs $5,000 or something like that.

Their website indicates that they are available for rental, but that may just be in Europe

I think I will stick with APC and Steam

Weird. I have used dry ice for years, and not once did I say to myself, "Hey, I should try cleaning with this stuff!" Interesting, to say the least!

Very neat tech, never knew about it and now much like DetailKitty, I WANT!

I looked into it, then discovered not only do you have to pay a huge price for the machine, you need a fairly large air compressor to power it (at least the ones I looked at).

We started looking into them seriously a few days ago, still comparing a few models before laying out the cash but once we get it I'll do a write up for the forums.
