Duragloss users, need help

Need some help with figuring out what I did wrong. I was set to detail my in-laws 2008 Honda Fit, Copper colored paint, pretty good shape. The plan was the following:
1) Wash with Meguiars Gold Class
2) Clay with Meguiars OTC clay bar and Quik Detailer
3) Duragloss 601 PBA via Meguiars foam hand pad
4) Duragloss 501 via Meguiars G110v2, with Lake Country 5.5" White CCS pad-speed 4
5) Duragloss 601 PBA via Meguiars foam hand pad
6) Duragloss 105 via G110V2 with Lake Country 5.5" Black CCS pad speed 3
7) Collinite 845 via G110V2 with Lake Country 5.5" Blue CCS pad.

I was going for a good cleaning and long durability for them, as the car had not seen wax in about 14 months.

Wash, and claying went fine, paint was smooth. Applied 601 as stated above, waited 30 minutes, applied 501 as stated above. Went back in the house, had a snack, waited about 45 minutes, and went back to the garage to buff off. Here is where the problem came in. The hazed product would not buff off. I tried QD, nothing, tried UQD, nothing. I pulled out my bottle of Meguiars ColorX, applied by hand, buffed the residue right off. I put on a Meguiars 7" Soft Buff 2.0 polishing pad on the G110V2, and proceeded to apply to the entire car. I let it haze for about 20 minutes and buffed off with no problems. I then applied the Collinite 845 via 7" Meguiars finishing pad, and buffed off without issues.

So what did I do wrong with the Duragloss 601/501? Too little product, too much? Too high a speed? I used medium pressure, as I wanted the paint to be nice and clean. I would appreciate any help on the matter.Feed back please
 
try skip step 3.

fyi, after step 6, i leave it overnight to cure then step 7 the next day or after next wash.

I would mix 501/601, 4oz of 501 and 1oz 601, use the PC to apply. Apply to a panel and buff off. I learned this from Richy and has been working great for me.
 
sal329-so you are saying no need to allow it to haze?

sylphy04-I was wondering the same thing. Maybe better off to skip the PBA for the 1st step.

Sal's just saying you can mix 4 parts 501 or 105 to 1 part 601, this will cause it to instantly cure to the paint meaning no need to let it haze, apply to maybe 1 or 2 panels then remove, also don't skip 601 on the first step. This is normal procedure, go 501/601 mixed first step then follow with 845 or go 105/601 mixed then follow with 845 :)
 
Sounds to me like you used too much product. I also notice you didn't really do any machine polishing/paint cleaning before the 501. Why didn't you apply the 601 by machine? That might have helped "smooth" the paint a little more.

Also, what about your machine technique with the 501? Did you work small sections and work it in until it was virtually gone?

I am wary of its short shelf life because I am not sure if I will use the entire 5 oz. mixture. Can the excess be stored for at least 2 months?

Um...mix a smaller amount in the same ratio.

Mixing a smaller amount. Two items that I have are large and medium measuring cups along with measuring spoons. I recently found a small shot glass that has measurements on it and added a couple to stock. You could mix 1-tablespoon to 4 tablespoon mixture and if you needed more remix. Its the ratio not the amount.
 
You shouldn't need more than an ounce. If you do it Zaino-thin a half ounce.

Don't forget to use some on your wheels . It really does a great job of cleaning and prevent dirt to stick.
 
Thanks a lot. I'll try 25 ml mixture just to be sure, 5 ml 601 to 20 ml 501 or 105. Measuring spoons will be helpful.
 
The paint didn't need polished, not much in the way of swirls, or scratches. The main selling point for me was the cleaning power of 501, hence I was using it as the cleaner. I did work it with medium pressure. My thought was I maybe worked it with too much speed and pressure, causing it to flash.

I worked the product just like I would work Meguiars ColorX, which has always worked for me without issue. Maybe the Duragloss isn't as machine friendly? I have had Klasse AIO do the same thing via machine application. Should I use a lower speed, or a less aggressive pad? I didn't use the G110V2 to put on the 601 as the general consenus was to hand apply it.

Thanks. I tried 501 on a faucet and it came out great and shiny. No doubt that wheels will benefit. :D

Mate, sorry to kinda hijack your thread. Maybe the premixed recommendation would work for you. Good Luck with your next try. I hope it goes well.

Now that I think of it, I never use any of that DG stuff by machine, I don't think, or Zaino either. Many AIO's are finicky by machine, like Z-AIO is always Z-PIA for me by machine. Maybe using the 601 with the 501 isn't the greatest idea by machine, or if you're trying to get the most cleaning out of the 501. I dunno.
 
I can tell what I do and it works like a charm. I apply the 4:1 mix that the guys have mentioned of 501/601 via DA at 4 with a white pad. Work the area and then buff it off. You will observe it to be smooth and shiny. Go around the car doing the same thing. Then mix 105/601 and either put it on by hand or via DA at 4 with a black pad. Simple, fast and very effective. This procedure has worked for me countless times.
