I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on some EXO during the sale today. I know it's not necessary but would it screw anything up if I wanted to occasionally top it w/ some carnuba or WGDG? Which QDs are compatible?
Thanks,

The question here is:

Why would you? I'm not sure of the bonding abilities of wax with EXO but if they did it would most likely hinder the look and functionality of the coating. I use the 1:20 dilution of Gtechniq C2 as a QD. I have also used MG Final Inspection. But use these quick detailers only to mist on the drying towel to provide some lubrication.

Furthermore:
EXO is a Hybrid coating with an inorganic base layer and an organic top layer. This organic layer provides all of the functionality of wax and then more gloss and more water/dirt repellancy than wax could ever imagine to have.

Why would you want to top it with wax?

Thanks for the replies guys,
The reason I was asking is that from some of the pictures I've seen it seems like it might be a little too glossy. I was thinking a little carnuba might tone it down some and give it more depth on a dark colored car, or maybe it won't?? I know it doesn't need anything else for protection. I was just wondering if it would mess up the EXO if I wanted to experiment with it for a different look.

Thanks again,

Too glossy? Wow. That's the first time I've heard of someone trying to lessen gloss. Isn't gloss basically shine?

I thing the problem about topping a product like EXO with a carnuba is the following: from time to time ( every 6 months or so) its considered best practice to "strip" a carnuba based wax and start fresh. Carnuba wax can get cloudy over time if you just keep topping it off, as I believe the top layer exposed to the air can oxidize from environmental exposure. At this point, you would be faced with stripping the wax, but not the coating. This could be tricky at best.

If I recall correctly, EXO has a "top layer" that is supposed to be organic and mimic the look of a carnuba wax. In any event, I think it would be hard to strip wax off EXO and not at least damage this top layer.

This is my dilemma with all coatings. They are supposed to last 2 years or so. However, this means you can't really polish or paint clean your car for the duration of the coating's life, as doing so will likely remove ( at least damage) the coating. Not to mention, you loose all the fun of trying new waxes due to the above issue.

You may just be better off getting something like Powerlock or BFWD and topping that with a carnuba, if you like carnubas. IMHO carnubas with coatings don't make sense. Keep in mind, all of this is just my opinion though.

Good info, thanks. By "too glossy" I meant like of some of the tire and vinyl dressings have that super shiny look that I don't really care for. It could just be the lighting in the pics I saw that makes it seem that way. The EXO by itself might look just fine. I agree that it's probably not a good idea to top it with anything. Just ordered the 180ml can on sale today so I guess I'll find out soon. Does anyone happen to know about how many applications you can get with the smaller can on a standard size car?

Thanks,

If you don't want the gloss EXO gives you would have been better off with C1.5 or C2.

You can probably get 2 -3 cars with 2 layers out of the smaller EXO. You only need to have 2 layers for coverage, so if you pay attention, you only need one layer.

The key to EXO is making sure the surface you apply it to is in the correct temperature range.

I tried putting wax on top of Exo. I found the wax really did not stick to it (not surprisingly). Dont waste your time lol

AeroCleanse is right about paying attention, make sure you get it everywhere and you only need one coat.

That's one of the reasons I think EXO will lead to some complaints in the future: people won't pay attention to it while applying and won't get the stated durability - for such an expensive product, people will be aggravated...

Hi guys,

I've been trying to find this and finally did. I think it explains "why" way better than I could. http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...g-definition-how-top-also-called-topping.html

That article refers to traditional sealants, not coatings... Because EXO is a hybrid coating you could say that it is already "topped"

Ok Thanks,

Do you happen to know if the CarPro Suede MFs would be suitalbe for applying EXO? Has anyone tried this? I have a bunch of them left over I bought for applying C-Quartz a while ago. I will be using either the Deluxe 600 or Supreme 530 for the EXO removal.

TIA

I have tried the CarPro towels... Personally I don't like them but try them out for yourself and see if you like them. Definitely not the 600's or 530's. You want something with a very small nap or a flat weave towel for application and removal.

For me, I use a flat weave for application and an extremely small nap towel for removal. The ones I use aren't available on AG.

Thanks. It must remain above 68F when curing as well?

No, the actual temp of the panel must be above 68 in order for EXO to bond properly. That's why they sell the infra red temp meters in the bundle, to be sure the surface it's being applied to is at least 68. As long as it is, you're fine. After that, they recommend the car remain dry for 48 hours to fully cure.
