False Alarm: Ballistic Missile inbound to Hawaii

I meant in worse light. Putting the nail in the coffin so to speak.

Here we go.................. it's all Trumps fault, everything that happens every day in the entire world is Donald Trump's fault.

due to the political climate right now with North Korea this was really bad timing

That being said I do not agree with what others are saying above about the fact that there needs to be more checks and balances or supervisor approval before this type of notification is sent out. This particular event was a mistake and I am sure they’re going to come up with a process to hopefully prevent it from happening again

Here’s my reasoning, This office that handles this is probably minimally staffed so let’s say at 2 o’clock am in the middle of the night there is one person manning this particular room. An earthquake hits somewhere in the middle of the ocean which has a high risk of a tsunami to hit the Hawaiian islands. The operator attempts to get approval from his supervisor but cannot get a hold of him because the supervisor either does not hear his phone or accidentally turned it off, or the battery dies, or something. Now this person has the ability to notify tens of thousands of people however he does not do it in a timely matter because he doesn’t want to get in trouble wasting valuable time. 20 minutes can make a huge difference in notifying people to save lives

I’m sure A lot of people could’ve been saved during the Asian tsunami of 2004 if they would have had a few extra minutes. Unfortunately 280,000 people perished cause they didn’t know the danger making it the sixth deadly event in history. If half of those people would’ve received a text message telling him to seek higher ground I’m sure thousands upon thousands of people could’ve been saved

What does a tsunami have to do with a false ballisitic missile attack warning?

Just curious, how many of those people do you think could even afford to own a smart phone and receive text messages?

It’s the same agency (emergency alert system) responsible for sending out emergency response messages so it doesn’t matter if it’s a ballistic missile, a tsunami, a tornado or a child abduction..a tsunami warning would be a similar message as Hawaii received yesterday with a different message

And that’s my whole point if those people had phones with text messaging using our modern system that we have in place today a lot of people could’ve been saved. Most people nowadays in America have a cell phone that receives text messaging so in my opinion it is a fantastic system that we have in place now but obviously it is not perfect.

First, it is hard to believe an emergency notification headquarters has only one person working, if that is the case, then we have a bigger problem. What if that person falls asleep? Secondly you can set things up so that multiple supervisors (or people) get notified. If none of them issues an approve or cancel, the alert goes out anyway, say in 5 minutes.

I watched an interview with a man on Sunday morning that talked about how he knew he did not have enough time to get to his wife as she was too far away. He had one kid about 15 min away and the other was about 20 min away, but they were in opposite directions. He had to make a decision on which kid he would try to find to be with thinking that this was going to be the end of all their lives. He was still visibly shaken and emotionally disturbed by the whole thing.

My family is in Hawaii and my father called me and my cousin told me a very sad story about my niece who was asleep, basically him and his wife were debating if they should wake her or let her go in peace. So sad

Feels like the 1980’s again. But back then I had faith that the people in the government who were in charge had some sense. Now? Not so much.

The crazy thing is, people who dont have even a decent place to live still have phones in the Third World. EVERYBODY has a phone. Some very smart entrepreneurs have come up with ways to get phones to their communities. Some even use phone minutes as a currency.
