I recently got an '86 fiero. All the body panels are either fiberglass or plastic. I put a bunch of time a week or so ago into claying, polishing, and sealing the paint. I use it as a daily driver but I try my best to wipe it down with detailing spray and a microfiber every night. Only takes a few minutes and is easier that the occasional full wash IMO.

Anyway, I dont notice this with metal bodied cars, but this thing builds up so much static when I wipe it down that it is INSTANTLY covered in dust the first 3 blocks when I drive it.

Any thoughts? Different cloth or spray?

FK425 is said to have anti-static agents that helps cut down on dust. Since I started using it I have seen less dust build up.

Forgive me... newbe here. FK425 did not turn up anything in the search in the store.

Ok, I did some more digging into the materials and this is what I came up with for body materials:

Originally posted by larini74:

GM called the Fiero body panels "Enduraflex". There is no material known as "Enduraflex". This is a marketing term. Four different types of reinforced composite plastic are used in Fiero body panels:

SMC Sheet Molded Compound was used for the hood, roof, rear upper quarter, and rear decklid.

RRIM Reinforced Reaction Injection Molded urethane was used for fenders, door panels, and lower rear quarters. The rear lowers were later changed to injection molded nylon.

RIM Reaction Injected Molded urethane was used for front and rear fascias.

TPO Thermoplastic Olefin was used for rocker panels.

Bexley Resin Blow-Molded by DuPont This material (not fiberglass) was used for the spoiler or "wing" on all Fieros as far as we know. The supports are made of TPO.

Interesting.... Looks like my car's made of plastic!

Looks like no fiberglass. I also saw where there is a detailing company marketing that they use cloth baby diapers to eliminate static on their final wipe down. thoughts on that?

I did a test wipedown on the plastic rear bumper of my car. I wiped with FK425 on the right and Griots Speedshine on the left. I did this because my car, esp the rear bumper, loves dust. I thought maybe static was a contributor and FK supposedly has anti-static properties.

After about 45 min driving, both had the usual dust build up and I did not see a difference in the amt of build up.

Good to know! although, Im not sure that would be a good test. Since it is the same panel, the static charge would equal out through out the entire panel. I think I might try a similar test though...

First test with a fresh wipedown with standard detailer and microfiber
Second with FK425 with microfiber
3rd with FK425 and cloth diaper (or any other suggestions I might get today)

After each wipedown, drive for about 30 minutes on the same path and do each test consecutively.

I think it helps more with the car sitting in the garage then it does while driving down a dusty road.

I tend to agree as far as the FK425 owner a corvette and keeping it clean is a full time job.I've tried a dozen or so QD all claiming they help reduce static to be honest I'm still on the hunt for one that even comes close to help reduce static.

My first car was a '86 Fiero, loved that car! Nice thing is they only take two mins to clean they are soo small!

One of my high school girlfriend's best friend had a red one. Lotta good memories in that car.

I had not thought about the static spreading over the whole panel. That makes sense I guess. Although based on that, the whole car should distribute the charge over the entire surface. I dunno.

When I first applied WG Deep Gloss PS 3.0 to the rear bumper cover, it sounded like I was lighting fireworks as I wiped it off. The static was discharging rapidly. After letting it cure, I added Pinnacle SSII and the static went away. MAybe next time I will try not using the WGDGPS and see what happens.
