FLEX 3401 or RUPES? - A question I get asked a lot! -Mike Phillips

Out of curiosity, on a flat surface, do you feel you could get more/faster cut with the grey force pads + 3401 + M101 compared to the Rupes MKII + MF cutting pad + M101?
Have never tried Rupes w M101, foam or microfiber. For some reason iv gotten in the habit of using Megs M101, 205 with Flex, D300, Rupes, Menzerna with LHR15.

I did find that Flex, m101, gray pad was quicker than FCC, LHR 15, Boss white fast correcting foam pad.

Which is better in what way? Personally I like the Rupes better.

Like I stated in my original post most people don't think that hard about it... they just ask...

Which tool is better...

See? No thinking...

Just like the random person that asks me how much to detail the interior of a Jeep Cherokee..

They are both GOOD tools. Very different, however. My detail on Saturday, I tried 15mm, but ended up using the Flex 3401. It did awesome!

By the time today is over I will have used the RUPES system on an old 4-door Olds. Last week I used the FLEX 3401 on a modern muscle car.

Here's what I say... (besides what I wrote about apples and oranges in the first post of this thread),

If the tool work... I can work it...

If the tool doesn't work... no one can work it...

You can quote me on that one...

:)

Now this would be comparing apples to apples

Or oranges to oranges.

That would be to compare the FLEX XFE7 to the RUPES BigFoot 15 to the Griot's BOSS 15

I'll stick to what I wrote previously in this thread and that is,

If the tool work... I can work it...

If the tool doesn't work... no one can work it...

The key thing would be after making your decision... invest the time behind the tool and get good with it. They all work.

I've been getting these giant vans, a friend wants me to help with boats this summer... I'm literally on break, half way through an "Option 2" (Polish/Seal) on a full size van. That 6.5" gear driven 3401 would be real sweet right about now. One thing that is for sure, is that there will be another 3401 in the stable here real soon.

The Duetto and this van... Nope, not friends. The old PC is killing it, but that 5.5" pad is just tiny compared to the van.

Soooo how bout a Christmas in July sale on both :xyxthumbs:

Only way you'll ever get a Rupes discount is a discounted gift certificate although this discounted GC are a rare bird indeed.

It's 7:05am on Monday morning, May 1st.

I'm checking my e-mail and I have an e-mail asking me which products to purchase for a RUPES polisher, here's my answer...

Hi Allen,

I get asked this question and similar questions like this so often that I wrote an article for this topic.

Here’s the link,

FLEX 3401 or RUPES? - A question I get asked a lot! -Mike Phillips

The nutshell version of my answer is,

If you’re going to go with RUPES – then purchase the entire RUPES system,

RUPES Tool
RUPES Pads
RUPES Products

Become an EXPERT with their system because it works.

Then if you want to experiment with other pads and products go for it. If you run into problems you can always come back to the RUPES “system” as it’s a proven system when used as a system.

There’s a LOT of info in the above article, I’d recommend clicking the link and reading it.

And this is why I wrote this article. I get asked this question enough, that is often enough that it's faster and easier and a more effective use of my typing time to write out an article like this and then share it every time I get this questions.

I wonder how other people answer this question?

Go with the 3401. Much more efficient for a beginner. I have some experience and still reach for my Flex 3401 first.

Mike I know for the PC 7424 you recommend a 5" backing plate and the 5.5"pads. Is that the same recommendation for the Flex 3401 ?

Thanks I did not know they made that. But is that what is ecommended over the 5.5 Backing Plate and 6" pads?

the stock 5.5" backing plate that is already attached to the polisher when you buy it will allow you to use 6.5" pads...
