Flex XCE 9-8 150

The more I see the new polishers being released the more clear it is I already own those which is not a bad thing. The only real change for me personally would be a PE-14.

I'm with ya there. I can see myself picking up a long-throw XFE and a PE 14, but not this since I already have a 3401. Not that it's not impressive. I just already have it.

Btw I love my Rupes 15 and Flex 3401, want a complete change and not purchase something I already own or close to it

Get the PE14. It's an incredible machine. I'm starting to use mine a lot more than my 3401.

I really hope this machine has plate options. I would like the 5.5 and 4 inch from Flex.

I don't know that size of the backing plate, but it def is different. And yes, it is fully intended to replace the 3401

I talked with the engineers of the both the XCE and the XFE they will be planning on making a smaller (probably 5" BP) for both machines.

Just the clear it up that the 3401 is NOT being replaced by the XCE. The XCE is an addition to the line of Flex Polishers. The 3401 is still going to be offered by Flex.

There's a timeframe element. They will have both for a little while. But the plan is for a replacement.

And what about xce being easier to control than 3401? Minus heat, would user experience be similar?

The backing plate has a little more "cushion" which is supposed to be a better experience and is a number of decibels quieter

I hope the 5" BP will be offered as a direct fit on the 3401 too

Will we be able to use the xc3401 plate on the xce? More cushioned plate is not the right direction for forced rotation. Proper pads are. Unless of course one wants less cut. Is the xce really turning clockwise? That would be truly a shame since the 3401 is the only forced rotation tool that can be held properly as a rotary without having to switch arm and body position or hold it on an angle. With side panels and smaller tools that is absolutely fine. But not with horizontal ones especially roofs. Truly a shame if the did indeed changed its direction.

My 3401 shows a clockwise direction also on the gear head.

The XCE spins counter clockwise just like the 3401. I can say that the BP are not as cushioned as some people are making the out to be. While demoing the machines in the Fkex booth and the Sonax booth this week I made sure to test these machines hard. I was pulling out 2500 grit sanding marked with both machines.

@evan How can you compare XFE to other long throw polishers in terms of smoothness, ergonomics, ease of use, etc. Do you feel its going to have bogging down issues on curved panels - thank you for your comments

Great, thank you. Must buy then!! Can the 3401 plate be used on it?

This is technically true, but context really needs to be provided in order to understand the reason and lineup position. It's simply being done because of the legacy issues. The 3401 has a lot of visibility in the current industry as it is referenced quite a bit and is in a lot of literature and documentation. That's the only reason it's not end-of-life. The XCE effectively replaces the 3401 in every way. If you are in need of a forced-rotation DA, there is no reason to purchase a 3401 now unless you need it before Feb/Mar 2016.

The BP are completely different. The new ones will a 3 bolt system.

As to compares the machines they were fine. They smooth as the could be for them being hand built on Friday in Gemany before SEMA and shipped over night to the show.

The machines will receive some fine tuning before the official production starts.

Sure hope the bp shown in the pictures then doesn't make it to the official production... a line up of pads that are intended and suitable for the machine would be a better idea. There's tons of them in Germany, other from very well known brands and others not so much.
