Can someone give me a recommendation on which soap to use while using a foam gun. I loaded mine with Megs ultimate soap and set the gun to its highest setting while it did ok the retention time wasn't very good. How do I get the foam to "stick" and stay on the vehicle for a good soak? I am using a Gilmour 95 foam master...

Well I have no experience with a standard gun...I have a cannon, but the CG Honeydew works great.

I have used honeydew with my Foamaster II and was not impressed. Maxi Suds II worked better.

Just my opinion, the foam one see's is not as important as technique and high quality product.

Dp xtreme foam soap
CG Maxi Suds
Megs Shampoo Plus

Water quality and pressure are going to affect the output with any given soap too. I have used many of the CG soaps and although maxi suds II seems well regarded, it doesn't foam well for me in my Gilmore foam master. CG citrus wash and clear, wash and gloss, honeydew, and glossworks all foam up better for me. Honeydew is my main go to soap, and citrus wash clear or gloss when the car is dirtier.

Do you dilute the CG citrus in the foamaster. I added the Megs straight to the guns reservoir. I have some CG citrus how did you use it?

+1. Hard water means less suds. Found this out the first time I took a shower after installing a water softener! That shampoo lathered up like crazy! Dish soap would suds up over the sink! Makes a bigger difference than you'd think. (Note that we have EXTREMELY hard water here, so the difference was pretty extreme)

I've used a few different soaps in my Gilmore, and currently use Chemical Guys Honeydew Snow Foam. From reading this thread, it seems that it doesn't work for everyone, but for whatever reason I have had good luck with it. For me, it's given the best, longest lasting suds.

The other soap that I have used that was specifically formulated for foam guns was the DP soap. I didn't find it all that great. In fact, I still have a 3/4 full 32oz container somewhere because I just didn't like it at the recommended dilution.

I have also used Duargloss 901 and Ultima Paint Wash in the foam gun, even though they are formulated for bucket washes. Nothing really to speak of, however if you had them around they produce comparable results to the DP foam soap.

Happy detailing!

Interesting on the soft water. I use my soft water tap when washing the car, so maybe that is why the honeydew works so well for me.

I use cg honey dew snow foam in my foam gun and it works great, suds everywhere I haven't tarted citrus wash in my foam gun yet but I only use that to strip the waxes and glaze

Is it consensus that cling is the thing?

Is it consensus that cling is the thing?

Depends on how you use it.

Some use a foam gun or cannon as a presoak to get rid of heavy dirt before rubbing a mitt across the paint. If that's the goal, a good dwell time is desired IMO, and I think the foam cannon (for use with a pressure washer) excels here over a foam gun. Foam gun's better than nothing though, so not knocking it if you don't have the budget for the pressure washer.

I've seen videos of folks using a foam gun to lay down suds immediately before wiping with a mitt or sponge to add lubricity to the paint surface in the path of the mitt or sponge. In this instance the foam gun excels, as the cannon and pressure washer can be unwieldy to manage without banging into the car.

As for which soap: For a foam cannon I've only tried DP Xtreme Foam and CG Maxi Suds II. I've got so much of both, that's all I'll be using for a while, but the Maxi Suds wins by a mile on the foam-ability. I am a bit concerned about it's corrosive properties as mentioned in another thread long ago, but I haven't noticed ill effects on the car yet. The thread is here: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/auto-detailing-101/73309-there-any-bad-shampoos-out-there.html

For a bucket soap, I can't say enough good things about the Optimum Car Wash soap. It's lubricity is unreal and the suds don't fade. Just last Tuesday I washed my car and poured the excess wash water out on the drive. The entire foam head poured out, shaped exactly cylindrical like the bucket, floated on top of the water and landed in the neighbor's grass (I live near the top of a hill). Two hours later, (yes, 2 full hours later) that same foam head was still prominently standing in the yard. I'm not sure which glowing space rock Dr. G made that stuff from, but it's incredible almost to a "that's not natural" level.

That's how I use the gun I recently purchased. I used Optimum car wash and felt it foamed well and the car was soapy for a good while before I touched it. I just sometimes wonder if the whole shaving cream thing is just a novelty.

I thinking the finer the suds are, the better they "encapsulate" small dirt, and a more uniform coverage of all the surfaces is probably a good thing for both cleaning and lubrication. But soap that's built up 3 inches off the surface of the paint doesn't seem to be necessary to me. Don't think it's doing much hovering suspended in the air.

Nothing scientific to back up that statement, just a common sense belief.

Duragloss and Poorboys soaps have been good for me in the foam gun
