Foam pads (Griots) not burning paint?

I tried a new buffer (Griots garage) with foam pads claiming it won't burn paint. It works excellent except they claim its better to use with their products only. I noticed in using their buffer to remove compound it appears it needs a better buffer (but with using their product it will probably be easier) Taking off paint it was a little easier. Has anyone tried this? They are right that you can't burn the paint what do others think since that is my biggest fear. Thanks

Your post is not clear to me, sorry. I have used the Griot's ROP with Lake Country pads, Meguiar's DA micro fiber pads, Meguiar's M105/M205, and D300 all without issues. I have not however used the Griot's pads and polishes.

I dont even understand what you are trying to say.

you can use your buffer with any products you want.

I don't use buffers to remove residues though just b/c I prefer to do it by hand and it's easier to just flip to a clean piece of mf than to change bonnets multiple times.

what are you trying to polish? I think many people on here are big fans of machine polishing. I am a recent convert myself.

Foam pads are not designed for removing dried compounds or polishes or even wax. If that is how you have been using the tool, I believe you will be very disappointed.

Have you researched the proper use of the Griots random orbital?

Watched any videos on its proper usage?

I understand but I'm not tellin' LOL

I thought you can use Griots buffer with any product I want but When I told them I felt it was easier to remove compound and wax by hand then with there buffer they stated their buffer is meant for their waxes and compounds/polishes.

you can remove wax using a buffer but you have to put a microfibre bonnet (like a shower cap) over a pad (like the Griots orange), but then when the bonnet gets full of residue you have to either turn the bonnet inside out or get a clean bonnet. Too much trouble imo.

Just use the buffer for paint correction and wax/sealant application.

They want you to buy their stuff so I'm not surprised they said those things. If you spend any time at all on this site though, you'll see that what they told you is just not true.

I agree and I have used it to remove the paint and you are right how changing the bonnet is crazy. It is easier to remove wax by hand. I like applying the wax by hand as well. MY primary reason for the buffer was to apply remove compound. I felt it wasn't the easiest to apply/remove the compound/polish.

I noticed Maguiars has alot of nice detailing equipment, pad, buffer. My question is What would be the difference between a Maguiar dual buffer compared to Griots (Guaranteed not to burn paint) buffer? I like Griots in that your arms dont feel pain from the vibrations while buffing.

The Griots has more power and a lifetime warranty. Both will not burn paint.

A few questions...

  1. What are you working on?
  2. What compounds are you using?
  3. How big a section are you buffing at one time
  4. What Speed Setting are you using when you machine buff

Size to buff when removing swirls
Buff a section less than 2" x 2" squared but don't buff to a dry buff.

Wipe-off wet
Then while the product is still wet on the surface wipe it off and move on to a new section.

Same type of tool. If you don't like the Griot's you probably won't like the Meguair's or Porter Cable models, these three are all the same type of tool.

Basically, the Griot's and Megs units are knock-offs of the Porter Cable DA Polisher.

To see how safe these tools really are, check out this video where I place extreme pressure to the back of my hand using a Porter Cable Dual Action Polisher

Pushing down as hard as I can

:)

They all look the same and are very similar. I like the Griots but when I applied pressure I noticed the pad stopped spinning. I applied light compound Buff Lite™ II Finishing Creme (I have all of their compounds Perfex is the greatest) I also used their wax Nano Care™ Blueberry Paste Wax along with the buffer I know the pads are also important. Griots has specially made foam pads and I am trying to figure out the best foam pads for buffing (light, heavy compounds, polish, wax)

I am debating if the following buffer is a step up from Griots? Thanks

what speed do you have it on? Most correction is done btw speeds 5-6

have you marked your backing plate?

I noticed to take wax off slower worked better the compound I had on 5-6 Maybe it dried too much? I noticed at times halo effect of the excess compund and I needed to hand take off.

here are some suggestions that I think will help you specifically:

1. don't use your DA to take off wax or to remove compounding residue

2. use speed 5-6 for compounding, speed 3 & weight of machine for waxing

3. when compounding with foam, keep your sections small (2x2) and make 6-8 passes, then check your work. Use 10-15 pounds of pressure (make sure the backing plate is spinning) for the first few passes then ease up for the last few. You should be leaving a wet residue behind as you make your passes, if not, then you are dry buffing which may not give you optimal results.

So I use wax from Malco and apply by hand so I should continue removing wax by hand? I should use the buffer to apply the compound instead of apply by hand and removing with machine?
