The faded part I see here looks like normal oxidation.

You're lucky. Once you get clearcoat failure there's not much you can do. Any of the products mentioned so far that "clean" or "abrade" or "polish" i.e. the 3D Speed or the BF One Step or even Meguiar's 3-in-1 wax, with a little elbow grease will remove it and restore clarity to the clear coat. Then just stay on top of it to keep it from coming back. By this I mean, re-wax a few times a year using the cleaner/wax.

8mm or 9mm or 12mm etc equals the diameter of the orbit stroke

Free spinning means the opposite of gear-driven.


The Porter Cable 8mm random orbital polisher is a free spinning tool.

The FLEX 3401 aka the BEAST is an 8mm gear-driven orbital tool




The faster you want to go - the more you have to pay - kind of like race cars.

Also - the "issue" with a free spinning tool is the pad can and will STALL out. This means it will stop rotating.

If the pad on a free spinning random orbital polisher is not rotating you are not doing anything. By the word anything - I mean you are not removing swirls and scratches.

You're more or less wasting time.

Free spinning tools suffer from pad stalling.

Gear-driven orbital have ZERO pad stalling because they are gear driven.

Never be sorry to ask a question on this forum. We all started from square one. Just like you are doing.

Wash your car.

Clay the paint. There are many quality products you can use as a clay lube. (My favorite is Griot's Speed Shine.)
Use plenty of lube, and fold/knead the clay often to always work with a clean surface.

Polish the paint with Speed.

Add a quality LSP. (Last Step Product) Speed is a great product that leaves some protection, but the protection is short-lived.

I watched just about all of Mikes pad history and use video. Following your scheme of wash, clay, polish, and then LSP and just fresh off Mikes video, to get my oxidize out, do I need just polishing pads or well, I forgot what the three pad types were from his video. I do remember foam vs fiber though. I am thinking about getting the Griots polisher this weekend. I plan on watch more videos, but I only have so much time to watch all of his vids. I still need to watch the AIO one with 3D. I am going to go get me some clay from either Walmart or an autoparts store with the Griots cleaner you mentioned, but I need pads and do not know what to get.
