Glaze over Sealant??

Quick question. Couldn't find an answer with the search function, so I decided to ask. Can you put a glaze over a sealant? Specifically, can I use Meg's #7 over a couple coats of SG?? Thanks!!

Putting a glaze over a sealant/wax was a trick in the old car show days...enhanced gloss and hid any remnant swirl/marring. I don't know if it is still a current practice. I think it's one of the reasons why #7 is called "show car glaze". Of course you would have to start over if you wanted to apply more LSP.
 
What about this. Glaze (Meg's #7 or RMG), Sealant (SG or other), THEN wax (Natty's or Souveran)?? Would that work?

You can apply a glaze over a sealant, yes. You can apply a carnauba topper over a sealant/glaze, yes. Just make sure you are through applying all of you sealant applications, or prepare to remove any glaze/carnauba before applying more sealant.

As MCA noted, at minimum you will experience a negative impact on the durability (bonding - it won't) of your sealant if you apply over a glaze. The sealants I'm familiar with require and clean surface.
 
I don't care much about durability right now. Maybe I will experiment. Thanks for your input!
 
I have Wolfgang Sealant on the Mach 1 and am getting ready for a car show tomorrow. I am putting a coat of the Pinnacle XMT Carnuba Finishing Glaze over the Wolfgang. It works great and adds some depth of gloss for the show.

I agree with Totoland. The XMT glaze is gorgeous! You can apply a glaze over a sealant but not the reverse. If you do apply a glaze over a sealant, you may want to top if with a wax to seal it in. I remember reading/hearing somewhere that a glaze on it's own will only last about an hour in the sun before it melts away. The wax will prevent that from happening, but if you wish to apply another coat of sealant you would have to remove the wax/glaze first. :)

Thanks honey. No pics of Isabela yet?? I honestly don't know the answer to your question about glazes over UPP, but glazes are so cheap I'd just buy some and do my own experiments if I were you. Or you can take the short cut and ask Killrwheels too, he knows everything. ;)

I know I love the XMT glaze. Oh my gosh! It's really beautiful and smells good too. I liked it much better than #7 and it doesn't stain the trim like Meg's does which is a big plus in my book and with souveran on top. It's beautiful.

Now im really confused......

A glaze is not a polish or wax. It is strictly a shine-enhancing agent that will produce a dramatic wet look on your paint. On the concours series, a glaze is essential to achieve a winning deep gloss. Most glazes have no protective qualities so always follow with a wax or sealant.

Yeah, I think I am just going to try it. I care nothing about durability. All I want is killer looks. I don't mind reapplying every month. :) I will post my results. My Meguiar's #7 says it can be layered... so I imagine it has no cleaners, so it can't clean off my coats of SG. 4 coats sg/1 maybe 2 coats of Meg's #7/2 coats of Natty's blue. Overkill? Who cares..

A glaze typically has absolutely no protective quality. As such it will wear away quickly in the environment and definitely with the first wash. Glazes can be used with all waxes (carnuabas) to help protect, and with some sealants (ie. synthetic waxes).

Guys, you are making this much harder. In truth, some products (like Souveran) look no better with a glaze. So why add to your workload for no benefit ?? Glazes have been used prior to car shows and on garage queens because they look incredibly deep and wet but only for a couple days or even hours.

If you want incredible looks then try a glaze alone, but realize you must reapply after each wash. (those oils and light fillers WILL wash away). Or, simply use a product like Pinnacle Souveran, Four Starr UPP, Wolfgang, Z that doesnt need it and looks just as good but offers some durability. I would only use a glaze personally if I could not polish and needed the fillers to hide some flaws and was considering a sterile or boring wax like Colonite, Mothers original carnuaba, and even some of the Megs stuff.

now also note marketing plays its part here, and not all glazes are really glazes. For example the Clearkote Vanilla and Red are actually polishes with fillers and I have even seen some waxes that are called glazes. Thus you must understand the product versus just the title.
