Greetings! New Member From South Florida

Below is a picture....not of my car, buy of the type of fading the clear coat on my Mustang is starting to show (this is from a Mike Philips thread on...drum roll...clear coat failure). That thread doesn't give me much hope, but we'll see. :)

Is it like kinda this? (click bar to view full image)

It's late and my eyes are tired, but yes, I believe that's what my Mustang's clear coat looks like (only in Titanium....silverish...and not black).

Wow! That looks great!

Well, I know some time has passed, but I did some work on the 'stang a while ago and I wanted to post some pics.

I used the GG on speed 5 for compounding and 4 or 5 for the polishing. I used the LC CCS Orange pad with Meguiars M105 and the LC CCS White pad with M205 for polishing. I didn't get a chance to apply a wax or sealant. Since this was basically just practice for me, I'll probably be doing it again.

It is time consuming, though!! It took me HOURS (I don't remember exactly how many now) and all I did was the trunk lid, roof, and hood! Something I'm sure I did "wrong" was compounding and polishing too big an area at a time. You guys weren't kidding when you said the 105/205 stuff flashed fast!

I think it came out ok. I did NOT get all the blemishes out. There are still swirl marks and the clear coat whitening, but it does look better and shinier.

Let's see if I can post some AFTER pics of the 'stang....

Welcome!

You may want to start by using the polishes from the Ultimate line. They have longer work times and may be a bit more user friendly to a new DA user than Meg's M-one-oh-whatever. Just monitor the temps of the spindle housing with your fingers to make sure it doesn't get too hot - and make sure the washer is on the BP spindle. Occasionally, the GG6 can fry pads for a new user using it aggressively, often with too much polish.

Swanicyouth,

Spot on, man!

It didn't happen to me with the Mustang, and I only used 1 orange pad and 1 white pad for the whole hood/roof/trunk job (I know, I know...shame shame), but it did get me on my 2nd job.

After the Mustang, I tackled the Honda Odyssey and rotated between 2 orange pads and 2 white pads and applied a sealant with just 1 black/dark grey pad. For the Odyssey, though, I skipped the 105/205 combo and went with Ultimate Compound/Ultimate Polish/Ultimate Wax.

After I washed the pads and let them dry, I noticed the orange pads were sort of concave in the middle. A little research here on AGO and I think I learned that I just overheated my pads! :(

That was another job that took the better part of a day and all I was able to do were the roof, hood, and front fenders/bumpers. They came out AWESOME, though. The roof is like a mirror...too bad nobody sees the roof of a minivan, eh? :)

Thanks, everyone, for your tips and encouragement.

Looks great, question. So you did all that and you didn't seal it? Carnauba, sealant, etc... ?

hernandez.art13,

Yeah, I know....no sealant/wax/anything.... Why?

1) i ran out of time that day
2) Since it was my fledgling attempt, I figured I'd be doing the job again....and doing it "more right" the next time. :)

Thanks!

Good Job! Congrats! You're on your way... Welcome to our deep, dark rabbit hole.
Don't worry, you are not alone...my guess is there were 8,000+ folks at Detail Fest.

I've never been a big fan of M105. It really cuts but it is very finicky to work with.

M101, D300, 5" backing plate & Megs 5" mf cutting discs work great for correction.
It is highly recommended using the Megs 5" backing plate with their microfiber discs.

Hello,

My name is Nelson and I started researching 'how to remove swirls' after getting my Lexus GS350 back from a local dealership's body shop for a quarter panel repair and came across autogeekonline.
