I just received a much-wanted Griot's 6" polisher for Christmas, but it's too cold to use it right now... I was disappointed in the cheap wrenches that came with the unit, especially that stamped wrench for the pad attachment, and wrote to Griot's.

Anyway, I ordered a 9/16" Proto (Stanley) Check Nut thin wrench made for this kind of use (the 14mm cone wrenches from my bicycle toolbox are a little too wide). I'll let you guys know how it fits after it gets here. Here's a generic image (the size on the wrench in the picture is, of course, not correct):

The 6mm hex key is much more easily replaced, of course.

I use my Griots wrench often and it has never let me down as long as I don't misplace it :o

You get what you pay for. If you get a DA with that power for that price then they have to cut on other things.

Hmmmm how hard do you need to tighten the backplate? I thought the cheap wrench was sufficient. A more expensive wrench would tighten the same, right?
The hex wrench was good enough to remove the handle which will be the only time that will be used.

I don't have any problem with the wrench. I'd rather they cut cost with the wrench than the actual machine. It has to be thin anyway in order to fit it behind the backing plate.

The better wrench cost me about $5, retail. I can imagine what it would cost wholesale. The edges on the original are rough-cut after stamping, and it's easy to bend.

I guess I just like decent quality tools, sorry. I expected something a bit better.

It really shouldn't bend unless you're trying to bend it. I'd be curious to see if the wrench you bought actually fits behind the backing plate.

BTW, I see you're in Pittsburgh. Go Penguins!

Where did you pick up that wrench should I ever loose mine

I think they must assume most people already have wrenches and so they aren't going to add further cost with the wrench. They just provide what is needed.

The wrench arrived yesterday, but it is just slightly too thick to fit. Oh well, it was worth a try...

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and sometimes things are cheap because the company is cheap, and sometimes it because it's the best solution, as in this case.

As noted, this wrench has to fit in a really thin spot, it's used for tightening a rubbery backing plate that is only supposed to be hand tight. Thin + low torque = stamped sheet metal.

Just playing devil's advocate "hey, I just bought this car that cost a LOT of money and they gave me a cheap key that's stamped out of flat metal, and they tried to make it look fancy by sticking a plastic piece on the end with the carmaker's logo..."

Well said. :)

Hey, I appreciate good tools and the proper tool for the proper job, but sometimes you gotta appreciate the KISS principle!

Exactly. I've never seen anyone break one of these wrenches while using it for its intended purpose. It gets the job done well and it's cheap!

My concern was losing the wrench. I ordered a couple extras from AG, 3 bucks apiece. Problem solved. :buffing:
