My ghetto mod to the backing plate.

Used 3M packaging tape to cover the outer half inch of the velcro. The tape is pretty thick and should hold up against the prickly velcro. Only the smooth side of the tape touches the foam. The tape's not going anywhere.

Hopefully this will prevent the foam pad from getting shredded.

If this doesn't work, has anyone tried shaving the velcro off the outer rim with a razor?
 
The rattling may be from the backing plate--everyone I've seen has a wobble to it. Why not just do it right and pick up a new 5" backing plate -- you can get a Buff & Shine 5" for $15

I did destroy two pads, but they were my fault. One was one of the cheap HF pads which got too hot and blew up. It was my first one I tried. I switched to a Lake Country pad and after doing most of the vehicle, I was using it on an area that was not metal so i lost track of the heat impact and blew that pad up too.

Is there a way to not have the pads blow up, if you only have one pad?

I only plan to polish my trunk and roof, which are covered in small pit marks, and I only have one pad.

Stop after finishing the trunk, and wash the pad? or mist some water on it?

I have seen the pics, but if you could show how to take apart and repack the head with grease that would be great.

Also, how to "turn the body" to put the on/off switch on top. This is the one I am most interested in. I don't like taking things apart without good instructions, and watching you do it would help a lot.
 
Ideally you would want more than 1 pad.
Specially in the summer time, heat does build up but if you have work with 1 pad... give the pad some time to cool down a bit after each section and clean on the fly often so that you don't overload the pad with too much product.
 
dammit. I took off the counterweight, and I'm looking at the hexnut trying to figure out how to disassemble it.

According to the exploded diagram, there are 3 screws I can't get to because they are blocked by the "eccentric wheel" bearing thing.

any help?

This one is easy, I just did it. Remove 4 screws on the head of the unit and pull out approximately 1/2" and spin 1/4 turn and retighten. Done, 2 minutes.

If you accidentally pull out to far and the brushes go in to far then it's just 3 additional screws (ask me how I know). The first is down where the cord goes in, that gives you access to the brushes, one on each brush. Remove brushes, seat head unit and tighten, install bushes, replace screw by cord. Done, 5 minutes.
 
I finally got one today. Only $47.69 with my 25% off coupon. Great deal. Just need to repack the grease. Can't wait for the weekend.
 
Great DA but the backing plate isn't so good.
If you can get you a better BP later.
You'll be fine for the weekend though :xyxthumbs:

What are you guys using for grease when you repack them? Moly grease?

Someone said to use high temp high pressure Red lithium grease. There are various brands.

Now how do you spin off the bearing/orbital assembly to get to the grease?

Someone please post pics/instructions/video
