Harbor Freight polisher question

As I alluded to:
Once the 3-4" pads are In Use,
they will naturally become "heavier".

Thus, IMO:
The need then arises to balance-out that "heavier-weight"; and, by having the polisher equipped with either of the 5-6" counterweights is a sensible way towards that goal.

Bob

I don't think my 4" CCS pads are even an ounce heavier
at the end of a polishing session

I know my 3" DAMF Cutting Pads wouldn't even hold 1/2 an ounce of compound

Is there anyone out there that has both the 5" and 6" counter weights for their PC and uses it with 4" pads?

If you do, please try the machine with 4" pads and each of the counter weights

If it performs better/less vibration with the 5" CW than the 6" CE, then wouldn't that lead us to believe that it would work even better with 10 grams of weight removed from the 5" CW?

I thought Bob"s point about the added weight of the polish made sense

This info has the counterweight designation based on the weight of the pad:

Porter-Cable 7424XP Counterweight Facts

5" or 6" Polishing Applications

The counterweight is a half-moon shaped piece of metal attached to the rotating shaft of the tool. This smooths out the random orbit action by providing a counter balance to the elliptical orbit of the rotating backing pad. If you change the pad size you must also change the counterweight or suffer unnecessary vibration and possible damage to the tool.

The counterweight off-sets the weight of the pad and ensures overall balance of the system. The Counterweight always has to match the pad to minimize vibration.

Porter-Cable 7424XP 6 Inch Counterweight 6" Counterweight#699933 For pads between 125 and 135 grams.

7424XP Polisher Counterweight Detail There are two different counter-weights which are clearly marked to indicate use with either a 5" or 6" backing pad. Therefore, if you decide to outfit the 7424XP with a 6" backing pad you must use the 6" counterweight. If you decide to use 5" backing pads you must use the 5" counterweight.

NOTE: This applies for sanding as well as polishing applications.

The Exception
Porter-Cable 54745 Polishing Pad
The only exception is when using the 54745 6" Foam Polishing Pad. Due to its light weight and the small-diameter of the backing pad, it can be used with the 5" or 6" pad counterweight. Porter-Cable outfits the 7424XP Car Polisher with the 5" pad counterweight

Is the 5" counterweight the same dimensions as the the 6" counterweight with the exception of its thickness?

It's been too long since high school physics, but making them the same radial dimension would cause degraded performance because of centripetal forces; ideally the thickness should be constant and the radius changed.

In pictures they look identical, except the screw holes on the heavier 6" CW appear to be countersunk

This lead me to believe that this is how the 6" is made heavier, but can still use the same length hex screws as with the 5" CW

If you Google: Porter Cable 7424 counterweight the 1st site listed has a side by side picture of both CW's

IMO:

The Porter Cable 7424XP DA polisher, and its ilk, needs a convenient way to make their counterweights lighter/heavier---as the need may arise---for a smoother, and as vibration free operation as possble.

TO WIT:

Cyclo has their VES system:

Just a thought:
I wonder why some DA manufacturer hasn't already
knocked-off Cyclo's Vibration Elimination System? (subliminal)
