Doing a few freebies for friends and family so I can get hours behind a polisher.

Yes I will do test spot to confirm my thoughts.

First car will be a Hyundai Tucson. Kind of a dark red, maroon color. Very clean and well kept. Light swirls.
Goal is to achieve clarity and deep gloss.
I'm thinking yellow pad/Keramik polish topped with P808 Or go with gray pads/UHS and top with P808?
My issue here is that I have only 4 yellow pads. My thinking I'll use white or green pads on roof and the back. Yellow on hood/fenders and 1/4 panels. Doable?

Second job is a ford ranger. Owner doesn't care about the truck. He is willing to let me practice polishing on it.
This was a former commercial truck that was painted with a cheap single stage white paint.
Plan to polish out with HD speed and white pads. One step and be done. I have 7 white pads.

Thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Tom

Thanks Gus...
Read the article.
I'll do a test to see how it goes.
Will UHS alone will bring out the gloss?
I don't want to spend too much time since it's a freebie.

I can't comment on the pads and polishes, but that single stage white paint may be hard as a rock.

You could probably go more aggressive and still get good gloss, but don't expect much defect removal without a lot of work.

The Lesson White Paint Teaches Us

Have fun with them.

Oh my. Just read that article. Looks like got my work cut out!
Based on the article using AIO on white---HD Speed is the ticket.

Yes it will

Hey Tom...

Check out this project for info on UHS.

I think this was the first documented detail in America with RUPES UHS. This project is also documented in my RUPES how-to book.

I just got the new menzerna cut gloss and wax. I'm going to use that on my father's truck when I get a chance

My experience and thoughts with this correction.

Car was always kept nice and clean. Swirls were hard to find. They were there and you had to really look hard to see. The car appears to have a flat, dull look. The paint had a "healthy" feel to it with a hardness that came from being cared for over the years. The paint was a bit hard to cut in general. I thought paint was going to be soft.

Did the test spots using Rupes UHS and HD speed side by side. Very little difference between the both. Speed provided a better gloss/clarity in the paint. Also removed some swirls/scratches and gave off a brighter color. Back finger test---speed was slick while UHS was oily-like and sticky with some drag.

Total polishing task was around 4 1/2 hours. I kind of went quickly over the paint. It cut just a hair enough to make everything smooth and slick. Swirls were still there but very hard to spot.

The test spot wasn't impressive. Nothing like the ones I see on the forums and not worth taking a photo! I was kind of surprised. I thought I'll see a dramatic explosion of new colors leaping out of the paint. I was kind of bummed out a bit about that. I guess the paint color in itself wasn't all that great and on edge of a boring color with flakes.

My after thoughts---should have gone straight to waxing right after the claying with nanoskin. The claying step was the most impressive step. The polishing step helped some but don't think the extra 4 1/2 hours was worth the time. Should have quit after 2 hours!

Oh well on to the next car!

Thanks for hearing me out.

I will tell you that speed will look more glossier because it's all in one and have HD poxy mixing in it, while UHS is pure cutting and polishing. If you are working on a good condition car, speed is one to go, but if not you better go with UHS. HD speed was demonstrate to us by my local distributor and it's become a joke when we wipe them off with IPA. Eventhough HD said that they didn't add filler but product did fill by polishing oil and wax inside. I use to have a customer coming back to complain within 2 weeks after going through a few rain that most of swirl are coming back using speed, then I test it again with wipe down follow up and sware to never get back. On UHS you will get real correction and only heavy defect that require 2 steps remain.

Thanks Mike! Read it through and through.

Did some reading and checking charts to get my head together after yesterday's experience.

A good chart to compare polishes:
Autopia Forum - Auto Detailing & Car Care Discussion Forum

According to chart---Probably should've stuck with the UHS for more cut. And then seal paint with WOWO product like the P808.
Probably didn't give the UHS system more time to get pads "broken" in more before doing a test spot.

Then on the other hand---There IS a time when a wash and wax is all you'll need! Live and learn!

Rupes White + SPEED will give little cut. The UHS system is very good, but you're right, the pads are a PITA to work with when they're not warmed up a bit. They'll splatter and it doesn't seem like the full potential of the pad is being used. SPEED will feel much more slick when wiped off because it has wax in it. Both are solid products.

Good job, and glad to hear it went well!

Ah man, wait till you get to that SS white one. I just did a SS white Tacoma yesterday that had 200k miles on it. It looked like flat white and a polish did little to nothing to improve it. I ended up using GG's BOSS Fast Correcting Cream and their BOSS Microfiber cutting pads.

Aw jeepers, really?? Maybe I'll look for another car then! The owner is kind of dragging his feet so if nothing gets moving, I will look elsewhere.

Never had this issue with HD Speed. In order to make it work for me, I'll do 4 passes at correction speed and then 2 passes at low speed.
