HD-DVD Player 99.99 --- Toshiba

I'm totally used to the slower start-up now. Like you said Scott, perfect time to grab a drink and a snack to get ready for the show. Image quality is excellent, even the upconversion of standard DVD's is amazing, and I was coming from a higher-end Harmon/Kardon DVD player that was amazing in its own right. I am very happy I made the jump. Scott, what are you using in your home theater setup?

My Sony DVP-NS3100ES take a few second to start up and is a bit "slow" to react to commands, but man, the quality is top notch.

And I won't even speak about the sound quality when just listening to a nice CD.

Unfortunately you are wrong. Machine was listed originally last year at 499.99 and dropped to 399.99. It is now offered at most retailers at 299.99. Only three stores have dropped it to 99.99, and all three will sell the newer replacement unit and have in stock currently for a price of 299.99 on average. (I do think more will drop price to move old units soon however, but just think the 5 free discs sell for 20.00 each).

My Home Theatre magazine rated this original machine at "very good" and only complaint was slow 25 second start up. Kinda like my Sony burner and well, perfect time to get some popcorn. And there is a very big difference between standard "progressive" dvds and both blu-ray and hd-dvd even on newer sets. Nice part is this 99.99 machine will play "normal" dvds too and convert them to "progressive" meaning only one machine is really needed.

As for the 5 disc rebate , it is offered directly from Toshiba. Thus anyone buying the machine should be able to get the freebies by mail, unless purchasing thru Ebay or Grey Market items. Download the PDF coupon on site and fill in and mail to them but choices are limited.

You misunderstood me. The player at Walmart is $99.99. It's not like it will go up to $199.99 next week. It's at that price until they're all gone.

If you really really have to look to see the difference, I wonder if it's worth spending money on. As everyone says, prices will keep dropping.

The difference between Blu-Ray/HD DVD and standard DVD is night and day difference. If you can't tell it, the system you are watching it on is not operating at full resolution or you really need to get your eyes checked. It's not as drastic, but there is a difference in upconverted and true HD content as well.

I'm basing my observations off a Sony 1080p set in the Sony Style store. They had a upconversting DVD player vs. the Blu-Ray. I could tell the difference, but damn, they BOTH looked awesome.

That makes more sense. I thought you meant standard DVD vs. HD or BR. You are right, bang for the buck, upconverting players are hard to beat! Video reproduction has come a long way in the last few years.

I see ... funny, Best Buy now lists it at 299.99 but not available. Circuit City offers it for 179.99 now and in stock. Walmart site and stores say its all gone at least in Florida.

I called CC over the weekend and they said that the stores were out of stock in my area, but that they had it online. I placed an order with the lady on the phone that assured me that they were in stock at the warehouse. Half way through the order process, she says "oops, it just changed to out of stock". So she puts me on the notification list for when they are in stock again and says that yes I will get it for 129.99. Miraculously on Monday morning, all of the stores in my area and the warehouse have inventory! So I call to place my order and they tell me it's 179.99. I wasted about 15 minutes trying to get them to honor the 129.99 price, no luck. Oh well, my BR will have to hold me over.

thats just bad CS ... you should have gotten the honored price, infact they should have matched the 99.99 price of the competition also. Its all over GOOGLE so proof is easily provided.

Is the HD-DVD/BLu Ray backwards compatible with OLD DVDs?

Yep. Most, if not all, will upscale standard DVDs as well. It's not true HD, but they look a lot better.

Remember, Circuit City is the same company that laid off it's higher paid, long time loyal personnel last year so they could replace them with new, minimum wage personnel!! I won't shop there again. That wasn't the first time they did it either!!!!
