HD Speed questions and observations

I've used hd speed 3 times now and it's absolutely outstanding. I'm still hesitant to brag on it because it's just so good I can't believe it

But SF4000 is not an "all"-in-one, as there is no sealant or LSP in it. D151, D301, HD Speed, Menzerna 3n1, XMT 360, WG Über AIO and others contain abrasives or cleaners, as well as an LSP. Some offer more correction than others, while others may offer longer-lasting protection.

Correct I find menzerna 3 in 1 cuts better than speed, however speed leaves better protection behind.

Yeah, 4000 is not an aio, you are absolutely correct sir, but it sure shined up my automobile real perty that day. Looking forward to using the Speed and how about CPs "Essence". Holy cow I'm gonna have to sell the chicken coop. :buffing:

Peace,

Darrin

I have yet to try Speed but I'm psyched to do so (received it last week), as I have no doubt that the glowing reviews are not simply hype. Essence could be a game changer if it is priced competitively, but I have my doubts that it will be as cost-effective as D151 or Speed in a production detailing environment.

Remember to do the entire vehicle and let the Speed dry prior to wipe off, this is important to the longevity of the protection. :props:

I've never used a machine or polish period, I'm planning to order the griots garage 6" and some lake country pads as well as whatever pads come in the griots 6" polish and sealant kit. Been trying to decide what kind of polish sealants etc to pick up with it. Think HD speed would be a good choice? Maybe some other stuff just depends how good the Black Friday cyber Monday sale is!

What pad are most of you guys using? Foam or microfiber. I've been loving microfiber recently as Ive had most German vehicle's but have yet to try the HD Speed I just got in.

Dont' bother with a kit--you usually get things you don't need or will never use. Get the GG6, equip it with a 5" backing plate and 5.5" pads -- Buff & Shine, Megs THIN pads or the new LC thin pads and it will handle anything you throw at it with the right product. You may also want to pick up a 3.5" backing plate and 4" pads for the tight spots.

Make sure you get enough pads. Here's an article by Mike Phillips regarding the number of pads: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/ask-expert-featuring-mike-phillips/88109-how-many-pads-do-i-need-buff-out-my-car.html

IMO an AIO and specifically HD Speed is a great product to start with (exactly what I started with)--enough cut to see some dramatic improvement, but nothing so aggressive that you can get into trouble.

HD Poxy is a great LSP to top the HD Speed--check out post #15 in this thread.

Couldnt agree more. GG6 (HD if you can afford it for the longer cord) a LC 5" backing plate, and take your pick of the 5.5 flat thin pads and you should be unstoppable with some Speed and maybe some FG400. FG can finish down quite nicely with an orange (light cutting) pad. You could always use speed as your #2 step after FG if need be instead of a separate polish.

GG6 HD - Griots Garage 6 Inch Heavy Duty Random Orbital Polisher

Backing plate - lake country 5 inch backing plate, 5 inch backin plate, 5 inch hook and loop backing plate

Pads (Take your pic, may want to go 6" Meguiar's instead of 5 that match BP size) - Lake Country ThinPro Foam Pad System 5.5 Inch

Meguiars 5 Inch DA Foam Discs 6 Pack

Lake Country 5 1/2 x 7/8 inch Beveled Edge Pads 6 Pack, foam pad kit, build a kit, buffing pads, curved edge pads

Buff and Shine 5.5 inch Flat Foam Pads 6 Pack - YOUR CHOICE!

HD Cut or HD Polish if needed then Speed :dblthumb2:

And I have the whole Menzerna line and have used FG400 extensively.

I had already planned to get the HD version seems like it will be worth the $15 extra, so the GG6", lake country 5" backing plate, HD speed, HD poxy, and I believe I'm going to go with the lake country thin pro pads.. Which pad would be good for using with the HD speed? Can you use a heavier cutting pad with speed and receive more cut and just adjust pads accordingly or is there only so far you can get with an AIO product such as speed? I'll be doing my daily driver a black Chevy Silverado first it had some pretty bad swirls just from me really having no idea how to properly wash a vehicle prior and possibly some customers I just detail "wash and pretty thorough interior cleaning" right now and would like to maybe offer some paint work such as claying, polishing, seal/wax. The cars I see are just daily drivers and I just the job to start doing a limo before it goes out.

HD Speed (as well as most HD polishes) cut is pad dependent. I use it on hard VW clear with an orange B&S pad and get excellent results. But, everything depends on your test spot to tell you which pad will give you the results you are looking for.

This would be one of the advantages of the Megs pads. Since there are only 3 pads in the line and you really would only need to get 4-6 of the cutting pads and 4-6 of the polishing pads and you'd be set. You only need the finishing pad if you plan to apply LSP with your polisher, but you'd be better off getting a couple of the B&S red pads to apply LSPs. They are very soft, but have a very dense pore structure that keeps the LSP on the surface of the pad very well.

Some random thoughts: The B&S pads are 1" thick, but have an excellent reputation for durability. The LC Pads are 7/8" thick, the new LC Thin Pro pads have been getting good initial reviews, but we don't know how thin they are and have no long term data regarding durability. The Megs pads are the thinest of the three at only 11/16ths, have gotten excellent reviews and no reports I've seen about poor durability. The Megs cutting pad has been reported to have cut nearing a MF pad, but that it finishes very well.

I would guess that with a Chevy Silverado you have pretty hard paint so you'll most likely need to use a cutting pad with HD Speed, but only a test spot can tell for sure.

I usually wait to see what a wider representative group here has to say about a product (and sometimes elsewhere - i know, blasphemy). I have heard so many folks talk about HD products i now MUST try them for myself, in my conditions and on my different paints. This product Speed sounds like a good replacement for my DG501 jobs for those customers wanting a 1 stepper wax/sealant.

In my experience you don't need a lot of D151 once the pad is primed, and can usually do a whole semi-large panel with one pad (by cleaning on-the-fly), so a little goes a pretty long way. A gallon for $25 (on sale) is a bargain. What are the usage characteristics for Speed? Prime, then minimal dosing afterwards?

With HD Speed (and all HD polishes) less is more. Prime the pad with 4-5 pea sized drops on the outer edges of the pad surface then start polishing. Don't spread them around on the pad, don't use pad primer, don't spray the pad with water or QD. For each successive area add 2-3 pea sized drops.

Use as many pads as you would compounding?
What pads are going to finish the best on black with using HD speed?

I use 6 pads per step either componding, polishing or AIO. As to which pad--it depends on the paint--hard or soft. I use orange B&S pads with Speed on my wife's non-metallic black VW and it finishes great, but on softer paint you might need something less aggressive like a polishing pad or a finishing pad on very soft paint.
