Hey there Part-timer is the 60/40 mix 60 mineral spirits and then 40 Spar ?
Because thats what I have been doing lately and there is a lot less streaking, just want to make sure that's what you guys are using. also would like to know what are you using for measuring, I am basically using some one once cups and kinda winging it from there, thanks in advance

Louie.....I use 60 spar and 40 mineral spirits......... for me, if you use more mineral spirits it levels real fast and nice but I had some that the coating literally wore off in spots after about 6-7 months. I've switched to the 60 spar and 40 mineral spirits and it looks better longer now and still self levels very well. As a matter of fact, I did my own personal car yesterday. I did both with sandpaper (wet) up to 1500. Then did passenger side with 3000 paper and driver's side with my old reliable 3M 3000 disc. Will try to post my results later.
I use a teaspoon for measuring.
 
Any thoughts on wrapping the shop towel with a small piece of silk to provide more uniform application and less initial streaking when applying the spar mix? Im going to be trying this method later in the week, but wanted to first see if anyone else has tried something similar.

wow really, I am going to have to try that I had it reversed but it was going nicely without as many streaks, it also has to do with how you apply it, instead of folding the Scotts Towel small I like to fold mine so its a bit wider and let that sit in the cup with the mix while I use mineral spirits to clean and prep the light for the spar urethane application

never heard of that let me/us how it works for you, would be nice to get the best method that works for everyone out there

I fold the blue scott towel in half and then cut a 2 - 2 1/2" strip out. I fold that strip in half and then dip the folded side in the mix, pull it out and let it absorb for a few seconds and then wipe it on. Works great! No streaks.
 
If this has been mentioned, my apologies...

Has anyone tried using a small foam brush for applying the spar/spirit mix?

I've always had great results using the foam for laying down 'varnishes' with them.

The blue shop towel works as well as anything. The ability of the spar/urethane mix to self-level is the key. Put it on evenly and walk away.
 
Hello guys! Well, i need some orientation. I can't find the Klean strip Odorless Mineral Spirits here in Mexico! Home Depot and Walmart sell it on USA, but not in Mexico! I need any information you can give me please! Or what can i do?

The foam brushes leave streaks plus, they are a heck of a lot more exspensive than the blue scott towels. I'd stick with the scott's.

Yea, the problem is Home Depot doesn't even sells any other Mineral Spirits, neither Walmart. I went to the biggest painting store here in my rancho (:P) but they don't even know what i'm talking about.

Today i'll go to HD again and talk with the managar, or something, and ask him if they can just import it from USA through their dealers and let's see what happens.

The weirdest thing is that KS Odorless Mineral Spirits is a product labeled in English/Spanish. I've been investigatin but can't even find any information for mexico about Wm barr products...
 
In some regions it is called "white spirits" or "white solvent."

"Paint thinner" could be anything from turpentine to Varsol to Xylene to lacquer thinner.
 
I went to a different Home Depot today! Still can't find the KS Odorless Mineral Spirits... BUT, I printed this link:

The MSDS's of the products (KS odorless MS and KS Paint Thinner) are the same safety levels, and the components are actually ALMOST the same with an ACGIH STEL 250 ppm for Paint Thinner, and no ACGIH STEL indication for KS Odorless MS... and a ACGIH TLV of 100 ppm to KS Odorless MS, and no ACGIH TLV for Paint Thinner... but all other indicators are EXACTLY the same. Any expert give us a hand please?

Lowes. That's where I got mine.
 
We do this at our shop and on my brothers grand pros its lasted about 7 months and still looks great
