I only recently learned about the Autogeek forum, and just yesterday received a new birthday toy - a Porter Cable 7424 kit. What I've seen on the forum so far has been very educational - looking forward to learning more about how to use modern buffing and polishing tools. My first buffing wheel was powered by a 2 HP Emerson electric motor that weighed about 35 pounds and was suspended along two cables strung from wall to wall just below the ceiling of my garage. A 10 foot flexible enclosed drive shaft ended in a buffer head that needed both hands to control. I used it on my first car - a 1937 Plymouth 5-window coupe, as well as on the cars of my friends and neighbors - including my best friend's '36 Ford. Had to be really careful, because that old devil would burn through paint in a heartbeat if I got careless. Finally retired that old Emerson in 1986 - actually gave it to my older brother, who still uses it.
For the last 20 years, I've been doing things by hand. But two weeks ago I clay barred my '05 Corvette, and realized that at my age I needed to give in to some easier and more modern methods - I had a tough time getting out of bed the following morning. So I hunted around 'til I found this forum, and then hunted around in the forum 'til I found what sounded like a much easier way to get a good gloss on paint. And I'm going to continue to watch and hunt and ask questions from folks who may not have been doing it as long, but know lots more about new equipment and products. Looking forward to a good long relationship. Thanks in advance.
