I have already done this once, but it was years ago.

Just a refresher introduction I guess.

And my first real question.

I'm looking too compound my impala. It has the factory paint (1965) and minor rust.

It has sat inside dry storage for the last 8 ish years and I'm finally getting around too it.

The car is clean enough for a mn car (needs floors and quarter patchs, that's about it)

But lets get some back story on it. I bought it as a father and project too be my first car. Its the basic 283 powerglide non SS hard top model. With what I believe too be a real 26k (was parked in 1971 when the frame broke, but that's another story)

It had little things done too it over years such as headers and a rub out when it was first bought and making it drivable before we realized that the frame was no good (all this with in 4 months of purchaseing acutally, lol) Then came the dry texas parts car and then the project pretty much came too a halt as other things came up. Mainly moving and my fondness for off roading.

But since its spring once again and the car has sat long enough I have decided its time too finally get the wheels turning again.

As the car sits it runs and drives with a leaky 2 barrel and 14 inch Keystone classics.

Basically how it looks now. Sorry for the dark photo.

I am looking for any products too apply by hand.

Currently I have 3m rubbing compounds and a assortment of waxs (Mothers FX, Meugars NXT and Black, turtle wax hard shell liquids) and No.7 Glaze.

Which of these products would work best (I know compound, polish, seal) or if I should look into other things

Looking back I see I rambled on some but you get the jist of it. Thank you for your time.

Welcome back! I would get a DA and some pads. That is a lot of surface area! Are you planning on repairing the rust or get it looking the best you can the way it is?? I do have to ask...how do you break the frame on a '65 Impala?? The thing is a tank

Welcome back to AGO! :welcome:

  1. Get a cotton, terrycloth wash cloth, like the kind you have in your linen closet.
  2. Wipe the car clean using a waterless wash or spray detailer.
  3. Shake up the bottle of #7 really well and hand rub this over and into the paint using the wash cloth. Use this product HEAVY. That means use a lot of it. Drench the paint with this oily product and rub it in until you think your arms are going to break and then let this heavy application soak over night.
  4. Next day wipe off all the #7 and for this more terry cloth towels works best.
  5. Then if the paint looks good hand apply the NXT Tech Wax.
  6. If there's still oxidation or dull areas you can try some of the 3M Rubbing Compound, follow that with the #7 and then the NXT.

I wouldn't use the 3M rubbing compound on old dry, antique single stage paint, it's likely too aggressive and if it contains any solvents it will act to dry the paint out.

If you really want to do a good job and you see the need to abrade off oxidation, then get a less aggressive compound for example the Wolfgang Uber Compound can be used by hand and will do a much better job.

Here's your picture, I uploaded it into your free gallery here on AGO so it could be "inserted" instead of just "attached".

Thanks for sharing the above thread and here's the short version,

4 Steps to restore single paint paint - 1972 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE

I called and talked to the guy that owns the Mercedes in the above thread, he told me he never finished the rest of the car.

:dunno:

This has good info too...

Yes, at some point over the winter it will be disassembled and repaired. Right now I simply want too enjoy driving it this summer.

'65-67s had thin frames. Well '65s had the thinnest, '66s slightly thicker and '67s had the thickest of the body style. "65s where really the pilot/test cars for the Non- X frames. From what old timers tell me the '65s frames would rot in a few years even before salt was really introduced.

As several have asked where I am located I might as well spill the beans. I'm just out of the North Metro in Rush City, Mn.
