Help: Dirty bmw wheels

Is this your car?, the best thing I can say is to swap out the brake pads with some Akebono ceramics I swapped mine out on my 745 and now it takes a month to get the same brake dust I used to get in a day... (figuratively speaking) my baby waits no month for a wash but u get the idea.... An ounce if prevention is worth a pound of cure...

Akebonos on my Audi. Wheels coated with OC 2.0. Clean up with soap and water is easy.

Actually the newer (after 2010) are ALOT better.
Don't throw off near as much crap.

Supposedly the replacement pads for all models are of the new material. (supposedly)

I had heard the same thing, but my '11 X5 is pretty much as bad as the '06 325xi...might be the fact that it has much bigger brakes therefore a greater area to generate dust, but they get dusted up in a short trip around town...I think it likes to test my sanity.

I've got the 335is Cab 2011. It doesn't do nearly 10% of what any other one I have or have had. It might depend on what they had around at production. Ck to see the production date. (on drivers door jamb plate)

Putting some 159s on my 325i soon so I've been looking at this topic a lot. Once you do get them clean, for maintenance, I've seen more than a few BMW owners rave about *gasp* an Armor All wheel product that supposedly does an amazing job with the dust. Anyone else have any experience with it??

I all honesty, I don't put anything on em anymore. I just use spray and rinse each wash.

I'm lazy.

The armourall leaves a white haze on em unless you use it too thin and then it dont work.

Simplist thing to do is keep em clean. Keep em clean, they'll stay clean.

I gave up on washing wheels every 2 days. I got new pads from Zeckhausen Racing and never looked back. Dave's a great guy, too.

I have some Brown Royal on the way. Can't wait to try it. If it's like P21S I'm sold. While P21S is great stuff, it's just too expensive to justify using on every detail.

TO get the baked on brake dust, I've used 0000 steel wool with some metal polish. Took it right off.

I picked up some wheel wax to see if that will help with the dusting. If not then I might step it up and put some DP Poli coat on them.

what type of metal polish? mothers, never dull, ?

Arent we talking about painted clearcoated wheels?
If so dont use metal polish or steel wool on them!

the wheels are Silver; Alloy. i have 1 person telling me to use 0000 steel wool and a metal polish and 1 telling me not to. can someone please help guide me, so i dont ruin my rims?

do NOT use a metal polish and steel wool!

try using Meguiar's Wheel Brightener or SONAX Full Effect with a brush, like the Daytona Speed Master Wheel Brush

Please DO NOT use metal polish or steel wool. BMW wheels are clear coated just like your paint. You can use the same thing for the wheels as you would for the paint. Use a good sealant for pretection.

Generally speaking you would not use a metal polish on clearcoated painted wheels .It will damage the clearcoat.

I have noticed however some metal polishes now say they are ok for clearcoated wheels .News to me ,Ive never tried it and probably wont.

Steel wool on painted wheels a def no- no!

Production was the last week of August...doesn't get much newer...

BMW 5 series Cleaning Wheels Tires and Wheel Wells.
Use gloves, eye protection, knee pads, and proceed at your own risk. The wheels are heavy, so use caution.

While car is on ground loosen bolts , just crack them using a breaker bar & 17mm socket.
1. Jack 1 side of car place jack stands under car for back up, and remove bolts, pull tire off of hub, set aside.
2. Meguiars Wheel Brightener for rim and Meguiars Super Degreaser (4:1 solution) for tires.
3. Dry Wheel using blower or compressed air. Wipe down excess with microfiber towels.
4. Apply OOC to get off residual brake dust, with MF towel.
5. Apply Meguiars Paint Cleaner to both side of rim, using MF applicator or applicator sponge, remove immediately.
6. Apply armour all wheel protectant on wheel, follow instructions, allow to dry.
7. Lift wheel back to hub. Screw bolts back into place using a star pattern, tighten just enough to keep the hub in contact with the rim.
8. Remove jack stands, place car back to earth. Following the same star pattern torque each wheel bolt 103 ft-lbs.
9. Apply Wheel dressing (or skip for matte look)

Don't expect the chemical to do all the work. The proper brushes and agitation is equally as important.
