HELP! Is this clay marring or scratches? (time an issue!)

hard to tell from the pic you posted but to me, it looks like it could be clay smeared on the surface.

what clay bar?

what lube?

I thought the same thing, but he says this has never happened to him before?!?!?! Kind of odd I think.

It's definitely not smeared onto the surface (as opposed to into the paint) because I can't get it off. Am using Zaino clay bar with Zaino quick detailer. I'm thinking the Zaino clay bar is just too aggressive or something. Very frustrating.

No, I've never had this amount of clay marring before. Maybe some minor clay marring, but never to this degree, and the pics don't do it justice, it's some scary stuff.

Wish I was in Orlando right now, I would swing by and take a look and help you out.

Whay kind of car is this and what color?

Im wondering if the paint is super soft where if someone sneezes in china his paint swirls.

It could be the slightest bit of contaminants being rubbed across the paint marrs it almost like sandpaper and his paint possibly being so soft marrs

Wish you were too! This is so depressing! Going to have to step up to the plate on that polishing. Thought I would have many months to practice on the beater but apparently not.

It's an 09 BMW 335i. Monaco Blue (dark blue). The paint is somewhat soft but not so soft compared to other car companies. I don't think it's a paint issue, as I've clayed the car before and never seen this degree of marring...

It looks like yellowish orange clay has filled scratches that might have already been there before claying, but were much less visible. You would need to remove the scratches by polishing. Perhaps if it is clay in those scratches it can be removed with some sort of paint safe solvent before polishing.

It looks like clay smears.

Try using more lube as you clay. If the clay is grabbing as it tries to glide across the surface, it'll leave "skid marks".

I'm pretty sure now that they aren't scratches or at least preexisting scratches as they appear to be more of a smear than scratches.

This is likely what these are, will try ONR lube, and Z-8 (car shampoo) diluted as lube as well. Will post the results.

That was my thoughts exactly. This actually happened to me over the summer last year. Freaked me out at first, then realized that it was just smeared. Took some either QD or APC (don't recall which one) and an MF and it came off.

I was using Griots quick detailer as a clay lube and found out that it's not too good for that. Since then I use ONR usually 2-3 oz for a 32 oz bottle.

I don't know that compound needs to be your answer for this issue. I would just try a polish if you ask me. I think compound may be a bit too aggressive for what you're trying to do.

I will start with Scratch X and if it is not giving any decent results I will switch over to Ultimate. Will Ultimate get out minor clear coat scratches too? Might as well try and get some of my clear coat scratches out while I'm at it.

Oh btw, the ONR lube is working much better, getting a lot less marring now. :xyxthumbs:

Oh ok, in that case...then go ahead. I thought you were just trying to get out the clay marring. :xyxthumbs:

Well I am, but am considering using a higher cutting pad to get some clear coat scratches out while I'm at it. Would Orange be the right pad and Ultimate be the right polish? Should get out the marring and any swirl marks/scratches right?

Always start with the least aggressive method first. Try white pad with Swirlx if you got it. Or you can try white pad with ult compound. If that fails then try it with orange pads.

I don't have much experience with DA correction to be honest. But, what I do know is that you should be using the orange pad to cut, and the white to polish. Never used Ultimate Compound before, so I'm unaware of it's capabilities.

Ultimate compound is in between M105 and M205. More close to M105 but less aggressive.

Alright guys, thanks for the quick replies. Will try white first then move to orange. Starting with scratch x, wish me luck!

Quick question, is it normal to see a slight haze over the treated area? I can see a clear difference between the area I worked on and the area below it. And the area below it is not hazy.
