Hidden Gem on Autogeek.net: New Flex Rotary!

As long as the 8" pads will work, I'm fine with that. I usually use 7" pads on the rotary anyway. But yeah, it does sound like it is a bit of a compromise due to the smaller size/weight of this machine (which would be the main reason that I would consider it).

Not like 1" is going to realistically make that much difference anyway. It's when you get down to a 5.5" or 4" pad that you can really tell how much less area you're hitting at one time.

Looked like Mike was using the Lake Country 1-Pad system with that rotary.

I noticed that as well. Interesting he calls it a 7" pad when the contact area is only 6" according to the measurements that were posted.

I'm going to have to try and make it to some sort of show or something where these rotaries are being demo'd or something

My guess is if they are going to be released within the first quarter of 2011, then they will probably be available for hands-on use at Detail Fest.

Or since obviously AG has a test unit which I assume is still in their possession, you might get the chance to try it at the Detailing 102 classes if any get scheduled prior to DF (and I'd be surprised if they didn't have at least a couple)

Detail fest i take it is at AutoGeek in florida every year? I would like to go down to that but i dont know if it will happen. i believe im taking a family trip in april/may to key west hopefully it will be at that time and i can just stop in.

7" wool pad?

Yes. And to be clear, technically they are 7.5 inches.

I have used foam pads on a rotary before, but not anymore. It just doesn't make a lot of sense to do so if you have something like the Flex 3401 that you can use. I.e., I use foam with the Flex 3401, and Wool with the rotary.

Ya know, this is my exact thinking. I've thought that if I bought a rotary, I'd probably only use when wool is needed. The 3401 for everything else.

interesting for the fact that it has all the spec of the makita but it's ligther ( not that I can't lift a 10lbs item lol..) but what is the most interesting thing for me is the sound level reduction.

However, will it be as tought as my Makita? ( 2 years of ''dropping'' it on the floor, concrete and still perfectly fine!)

Wait until you see, hear, and use this thing! It is so quiet, a little lighter, just as powerful, but best of all it stays COOL! Both times I handled it after use it was cool to the touch! It's going to be a tough decision between this and the new DeWalt 849...

I never felt the makita hot to touch..

By looking at the video. I don't know if it's because mike used it at speed 2000 or it's my cheap speaker on my laptop but it doesn't feel quieter than any other rotaty I used.

I was thinking the same until I realized that some sounds can be tough to capture. So I'm going to hold judgement based on that recording.

However, it makes those statements more believable when another forum member has actually used it!

IMO, the 600 rpm speed, the lighter weight, the smooth operation and the reduction in noise levels makes it worth buying over the other rotaries.

I am really wondering if this is the Festool RAP 150 Shinex in FLEX clothing to sell it in the states.

Specs are almost identical and each have the 150 in the model number. I know that Festool wanted to sell them here, but as the Festool name is mainly associated with woodworking in the US, they did not know if it would sell.

The similarities are just so prevalent, it has to be the same unit. If the price is close to $400, thats just one more similarity. :D

Oh, and yes, I want one.

Most pad manufactures list pad size by diameter as measured by the max diameter, usually from the back of the pad, not the working face so I'm just following their system but you are right and I usually make a point to actually drag out an old fashioned wooden ruler in a lot of my articles on products and show measurements to give everyone reference points they can easily relate too...

Just a little touch I like to include because I know that's the kind of information I would like to get about products I'm interested in and you usually don't see shared on other forums...

Here you go... from this recent article... :props:

The actual diameter of the working portion of the face of the pads measures right around 6"

Richard is right... it's powerful, it's quiet and it's cool... it's definitely my new favorite rotary buffer.

Just to squash any potential rumors... I had a chance to meet with Siegfried Suby from Flex, Germany and both he and Bob stated this is Flex's newest design.

Special Visit from Flex including Siegfried Suby, Andreas Ditsche and Robert C. Eichelberg!

This video also shows 3D cut away illustrations provided to us from Flex...

I really don't need this, but I am really wanting it!
