How to make Meg's MF Towel stop releasing fibers ?

It would be interesting and helpful if you took the remaining candidates, being careful to determine the best of the bunch. Which, I guess would be the one that would allow the most pressure before scratching?

I was under the impression that the best towel was the one allowing removal of the most material with the least pressure. I thought that was what Megs was intended for leaving other quality towels for their designed purpose: removal of defects and contaminants?

I am still learning. But I still question whether the test just reflects what happens when you use a towel with lint. And doesn't answer the "why" of Megs continued popularity for what I thought was the "final" wipe."

A very thought provoking thread. Not totally convinced.... but I have learned a lot.
;)

These are great questions you're bringing to the "table"

IMO you're right, the one that allows more pressure without scratching will be the best, because with less pressure it sure won't..... but there are other things like you said... it isn't worth a thing if it won't scratch the paint but neither remove polishing and wax residues...

I would say meg's towels still sells a lot mostly because Meguiars is a strong brand and for the little more informed noob it's not only a quality brand... it's THE BRAND itself......
I say so because that was my case a few months back.

We know that after they become 3M more and more of their products are being designed with production in mind, so I think that sometimes some of them must leave us Geek's not too happy...

I really don't know if the idea behind this towel was to use it while polishing by hand with products like ScratchX 2.0... at least I only used some of them to wash my car and after getting the MF wash mitts, I only use them to remove polishing residue and wax which I don't think it does very well.....

I'll start another thread asking about the relation between lint and hazing during polishing..... all of mine poshing jobs hazed, even using m205 + HT crimson pad (although a lot less)....
I live in Brazil, so I'm thinking most of our OEM paints must be really soft which would make my m105 / m86 / D300 almost useless and that's why I already ordered PO85RD along with some open cell flat pads (all colors but yellow from lake country as Mark - 07 z-oh-6 - said the HT pads weren't good to finish on a soft paint and I trust his judgment)......
But it could also be the lint was hazing the paint.......

After receiving my new towels I'll update this thread with some impressions of them...

Looking forward to hearing your impressions with the new towels and pads. I want to get some new pads and towels for Christmas.

IMO you're right....

And based on your opinion of me, sir, you sir are a Genius! :urtheman:

Seriously speaking, am looking forward to the new thread.
Any ideas on how to fix the problem of lint? If you fix it for Megs towels (which I take you feel is the worse case senerio), sure would help "each one, teach one."

It has been an easier learning experience for me than for you as I stuck with a single product line that I knew was trusted and reliable. Allowed me to pick the brains of really talented detailers who were working with the same products as me. Took the ambiguity out of the learning, as I knew my lack of results were probably due to my technique.

I think that was my experience with lint. Never thought it was the towel, just me not prepping it right.

My plush towels last so long, Maybe when Megs orders another "lot" they will change manufactures. Years ago, I heard a similar complaint with AG m/f's and it was taken care of quickly. They fixed the towels + Great return policy.

BTW, I believe 3M purchased a company, not just a brand name to exploit the name of. But could be wrong.

Brazil is good, I live in CA, ...please send food. Anderson Silva? The "Spider" rocks!

GREAT THREAD!

I just bought some Meguiars Supreme Shine MF and they lint a lot too on my car. I am glad I am not the only one. I might have to replace them with the Cobra MFs.

YMMV, i've had more lint with the cobra's then the megs microfibers...

Ok guys!

As promised I'm updating this thread. It's not a review but you can have an idea about the new towels I got from AG:
Super Soft Deluxe Microfiber Towels, microfiber detailing towels, microfiber buffing towels, detail cloth, micro fiber

First the fell is nice, softer, thicker with softer edges than Megs..... and I might say they kind smell nice too.
Unlike megs this towels has a plush side and the other is pretty flat as you can see on the pictures.
I haven't washed them yet, I just got the box with all the stuff and I can say that they won't lint.

I haven't test field them yet, which I'll do next week (and then update again this thread).

Here are the pictures from the cd test:

This was the starting condition from the surface:

Now after a insane amount of pressure it did scratch (as expected of course), but I can tell you that they didn't put any scratch on the cd before turning from high to very high pressure, but it was only when I applied the insane pressure that scratches came in full.

Switched 180º the cd to test the flat side from the towel. The results were just like plush side, but it was easier to sctrach the surface with this side, but with regular to medium-high pressure it won't put any scratch anyway.

A close look so you can see fibers from close

Here they are, I bought 9 in total with a mother's ultra soft drying towel
Mothers Ultra Soft Drying Towel has a foam core wrapped in microfiber to quickly towel-dry your vehicle after washing.

Compared to Megs, before field testing I can say I like them much better than Megs towels.. but I'm quite sure my impressions won't be that different after testing it for real.

And here is Megs cd test result so you guys can remember.

It does seems from the pictures that megs towels scratched less than the super soft, but take into consideration that I didn't had the brinkmann spotlight at the time I took megs pictures.
