It would be interesting and helpful if you took the remaining candidates, being careful to determine the best of the bunch. Which, I guess would be the one that would allow the most pressure before scratching?
I was under the impression that the best towel was the one allowing removal of the most material with the least pressure. I thought that was what Megs was intended for leaving other quality towels for their designed purpose: removal of defects and contaminants?
I am still learning. But I still question whether the test just reflects what happens when you use a towel with lint. And doesn't answer the "why" of Megs continued popularity for what I thought was the "final" wipe."
A very thought provoking thread. Not totally convinced.... but I have learned a lot.

These are great questions you're bringing to the "table"
IMO you're right, the one that allows more pressure without scratching will be the best, because with less pressure it sure won't..... but there are other things like you said... it isn't worth a thing if it won't scratch the paint but neither remove polishing and wax residues...
I would say meg's towels still sells a lot mostly because Meguiars is a strong brand and for the little more informed noob it's not only a quality brand... it's THE BRAND itself......
I say so because that was my case a few months back.
We know that after they become 3M more and more of their products are being designed with production in mind, so I think that sometimes some of them must leave us Geek's not too happy...
I really don't know if the idea behind this towel was to use it while polishing by hand with products like ScratchX 2.0... at least I only used some of them to wash my car and after getting the MF wash mitts, I only use them to remove polishing residue and wax which I don't think it does very well.....
I'll start another thread asking about the relation between lint and hazing during polishing..... all of mine poshing jobs hazed, even using m205 + HT crimson pad (although a lot less)....
I live in Brazil, so I'm thinking most of our OEM paints must be really soft which would make my m105 / m86 / D300 almost useless and that's why I already ordered PO85RD along with some open cell flat pads (all colors but yellow from lake country as Mark - 07 z-oh-6 - said the HT pads weren't good to finish on a soft paint and I trust his judgment)......
But it could also be the lint was hazing the paint.......

After receiving my new towels I'll update this thread with some impressions of them...
