How would you detail this car? ----> Barn Find - 1961 Plymouth Fury

Here's the write-up for the work done...

Before & After - 1961 Plymouth Fury Barn Find

Here's the process used....

Process

Step 1 - Chemically decontaminate the car
I used a modified technique for Iron X because I wanted to make sure any iron contamination is removed. I sprayed down the body panels with Iron X starting with horizontal panels first and then after they were rinsed clean I moved onto the vertical panels only tackling one side at a time.

Step 2 - Wash car using DP Waterless Auto Wash
For this I used a super heavy saturation with LOTS of clean microfiber towels to liquefy the Iron X and wipe it plus any and all dirt off the body panels.

Step 3 - Mechanically decontaminate the paint
For this we used the Porter Cable 7424XP with Nanoskin Autoscrub Pads (Medium Grade) and Detailer's Pro Series Universal Clay Lube

Step 4 - Compound paint using SONAX CUTMAX
For this step we used the SONAX CUTMAX with the Flex 3401 on Speed 6 with 6.5" Lake Country Hybrid Orange Cutting Pads.

Step 5 - Machine polish and wax using SONAX PAINT CLEANER HYBRID NPT
Next we used the SONAX PAINT CLEANER which is not technically a dedicated paint cleaner but a hi-tech cleaner/sealant.

A cleaner/sealant is like a cleaner/wax in that it will clean, polish and protect in one step only instead of using some type of natural wax ingredient for protection it uses some type of synthetic ingredients for protection.

Rob McCrary at SONAX USA told me that the SONAX PAINT CLEANER had the cutting ability of SONAX Profiline Nano Polish. So this should remove any haze left by the aggressive compounding step while leaving the paint clear, glossy, rich in color and also protected.

For the exterior glass, chrome and stainless steel trim I simply ran over these surfaces using the orange Hybrid cutting pad with the SONAX CUTMAX.

Hubcaps and tires were wiped clean using an all purpose cleaner.

Now who came closest to describing the above?

How about a few guys read through this thread and lets come up with a winner!

:xyxthumbs:

I am curious, most often with old single stage paints you first rehab the paint using Megs #7, why did you not do that this time?

I've read through and can say it's really hard to say who was closest. I had a few steps right, but so did a bunch of other guys. What does everyone else think?

Here's the simple version of my steps...

Iron X
Waterless Wash
Nanoskin
Compound
Cleaner/Wax

If we remove the Iron X step becaue that probably caught most people by surprise, then it would be,

Waterless Wash
Nanoskin
Compound
Cleaner/Wax

Someone must have come close to the above?

:)

Rinseless Wash, steamer around trim, design an iron remover that can be used with rinseless wash and use that, then Nanoskin clay towel to decontaminate the whole car.

your favorite metal polish.

The tires are ugly and the hubcaps need shining.
OHHH, I know what Mike's gonna use on this! His trusty PC with a cyclo brush and DP Tire Cleaner! Remove the hubcaps and polish them by hand in the good ol' Florida sun.

The glass is filthy inside and out.
Flex PE14-2 with a rayon glass polishing pad on the exterior and Wolfgang glass cleaner on the inside with the Glass Master tool.

Can't seem to edit my comment so I'd like to submit an edit here. Forgot the correction step.
While everyone else is suggesting Meguiars #7 I don't think that's what Mike is looking for. The paint does not look oxidized in the photos. Would be helpful if I knew how much correction you were looking to get. I haven't heard if Essense is fine for single stage paints but if so I believe this would be a great vehicle to test it on. If intense correction is needed I would suggest WG Uber 3.0 followed with WG Polish Enhancer.

:)

Broke down my steps above:
Iron-X
Rinseless Wash
Nanoskin
Compound
Essense (AIO/cleaner wax)

I don't really like voting for myself but I'd say I was pretty close... And I still think Marine 31 would be a good idea to try on the vinyl interior :xyxthumbs:

I was the only one who said to design an iron remover that can be used with rinseless/waterless wash ;)

It wasn't oxidized, rather full of scratches and swirls.

Bingo - however, doing #7 wouldn't have hurt. As a matter of fact, it would have helped, but it would have been a very tedious extra and unnecessary step.

I was going to guess a rinsless wash or perhaps steam. My concern would have been the age of the seals around the windows and door seals.

So iron-x is safe to use on single stage?

I am curious, most often with old single stage paints you first rehab the paint using Megs #7, why did you not do that this time?

Keen observation Grasshopper....

As others already stated, this car didn't have chalky white oxidation, so nothing to really revive.

The paint was actually shiny after the Iron X and Nanoskin treatment. It did however have lots of swirls and scratches and also a BROWN stain just from years of not having the paint properly cleaned and/or polished.

The compounding removed the brown stain on and in the top surface of the paint and that's what really restored the vibrant color.

The SONAX CUTMAX with the orange cutting pad on the Flex 3401 did an amazing job of cutting the paint down fast and today out in the sun it has an almost perfect finish.

:)

Very few people chose to not mention using #7, narrowing it down pretty well. This left irvsmith, mantilgh, FTA, theory816, myself, hollerstiltner, and petflunky. All 7 mentioned mechanical decontamination, so that changes nothing. All but Mantilgh suggested cutting/compounding, bringing it to 6. Out of us final 6, FTA was they only one to mention some sort of hybrid/AIO product and talk about using an iron removal product in conjunction with an Eco-friendly wash method.

:iagree:
With that, my vote goes to FTA!!!:dblthumb2:

Now, I'm done with this. Reading through this thread several times and going back and forth from this response to the thread to pick through each response on my little phone screen was kinda a pain in the butt.

I agree. There were lots of great guesses and I'd say this was a lot trickier project to guess than most projects but as you demonstrated, Ryan aka FTA really came the closest and as such he's the winner!

Or to use acronyms...

FTA FTW

:D

Verily you shall receive your award too!

I appreciate that you took the time to go through the thread and all the replies and do the work to sort it out as I'm busier than a one-armed wallpaper hanger.

Check your PM's
